The stress of infestation can also predispose birds to secondary bacterial or fungal infections, compounding the respiratory compromise.

Several effective treatments are available, and most birds respond well when treatment is initiated before severe damage has occurred. Prevention through proper quarantine of new birds, treatment of breeding pairs before reproduction, and maintenance of good husbandry practices significantly reduces the risk of infestation.
