Chronic low-level exposure may cause nonspecific signs including lethargy, weakness, and weight loss that may go unrecognized for extended periods. Acute high-level exposure causes dramatic neurological signs including ataxia, seizures, and blindness that demand immediate attention. Gastrointestinal signs including regurgitation, crop stasis, and bloody droppings are common. Without treatment, lead poisoning is often fatal, but even with treatment, some birds suffer permanent neurological damage. Treatment of lead poisoning centers on chelation therapy, which uses specialized drugs to bind lead and facilitate its excretion from the body. Supportive care addresses specific symptoms and maintains organ function during treatment. When lead objects are visible on radiographs, removal through endoscopy or surgery may be necessary to eliminate the ongoing source of exposure.
