The primary cause of Conure Bleeding Syndrome is believed to be a deficiency in vitamin K, which is essential for the production of clotting factors in the liver. Unlike many other parrot species, conures appear to have a unique metabolic requirement for vitamin K that makes them particularly susceptible to deficiencies when fed inadequate diets. The condition may also be linked to liver dysfunction, as the liver is responsible for producing the proteins necessary for normal blood coagulation. Birds with this condition may experience bleeding from the nares, oral cavity, skin, feather follicles, or internally into body cavities.
