Following initial injectable treatment, most protocols transition to oral vitamin K1, which must be continued for extended periods depending on the specific rodenticide involved. Oral vitamin K1 requires dietary fat for optimal absorption, making administration with food important. The duration of treatment varies significantly based on whether the bird was exposed to first-generation or second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides.
The safety profile of vitamin K1 is generally excellent when administered at appropriate therapeutic doses under veterinary guidance. Unlike vitamins A and D, vitamin K1 does not accumulate to toxic levels as readily, and adverse effects from supplementation are uncommon. However, injectable vitamin K1 has been associated with severe reactions in some species when given intravenously, so subcutaneous or intramuscular routes are preferred for birds.
