Royal Grammas coexist peacefully with the vast majority of reef community fish, making them compatible with nearly any non-predatory species sharing appropriate water parameters and aquarium space. Ideal companions include clownfish, small wrasses, cardinalfish, firefish, blennies, gobies, anthias, and other peaceful species that do not compete for cave-dwelling territory. Larger peaceful species including tangs, dwarf angelfish, and rabbitfish typically ignore Royal Grammas entirely, and the size differential prevents the basslet from perceiving them as territorial threats.

The critical compatibility exclusion involves species resembling the Royal Gramma in coloration or body shape, which trigger the intense territorial response normally reserved for conspecifics. The Royal Dottyback (Pictichromis paccagnellae) represents the most problematic look-alike, as its nearly identical purple-and-yellow pattern provokes immediate and sustained aggression from the Royal Gramma regardless of tank size. Other purple-hued fish including certain orchid dottybacks may also elicit heightened territorial responses, though the reaction is generally less severe when the overall color pattern differs from the Royal Gramma's specific bicolored arrangement.

Housing multiple Royal Grammas in the same aquarium is strongly discouraged in standard reef systems below 100 gallons. Conspecific aggression in this species escalates rapidly from threatening displays to persistent physical combat that invariably results in serious injury or death of the subordinate individual. In very large reef systems exceeding 100 gallons with multiple widely separated cave structures and extensive visual barriers, established pairs or carefully managed harems may coexist, but success requires close monitoring and willingness to intervene if aggression exceeds ritualized display behavior.

Breeding Royal Grammas in captivity has been accomplished by both commercial aquaculture facilities and dedicated hobbyists. Males construct nests within their cave territories using algal filaments, mucus threads, and small pieces of substrate material cemented together to form a loosely structured enclosure. After courtship involving color intensification and display swimming near the cave entrance, the female deposits adhesive eggs within the nest structure. The male then guards and tends the nest, fanning the eggs to maintain water circulation and defending against potential egg predators throughout a developmental period of approximately five to seven days.

Larval rearing represents the principal challenge in Royal Gramma captive breeding, as the tiny, pelagic larvae require appropriately sized live first foods including rotifers cultured at precise densities. Larvae transition to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow, eventually settling into benthic juvenile form after a metamorphosis period of roughly three to four weeks. The technical demands of larval rearing limit home-scale breeding success, but commercial production has increased steadily, expanding the availability of captive-bred Royal Grammas that offer superior health, hardiness, and environmental sustainability compared to wild-collected specimens.
