Pufferfish eggs typically hatch within five to seven days after fertilization, depending on the species and water temperature. The newly hatched fry are extremely small and nearly transparent, making them difficult to spot in a standard aquarium. During these critical first hours, the fry will remain relatively stationary as they absorb the remainder of their yolk sac, which provides essential nutrition before they are capable of independent feeding.
It is vital that the hatching tank or breeding enclosure is kept undisturbed during this period. Sudden vibrations, strong currents, or aggressive filtration can stress or injure the delicate fry. Use a sponge filter set to its lowest flow rate to maintain gentle water circulation without creating suction that could trap the tiny hatchlings. Lighting should be kept dim to reduce stress and mimic the sheltered conditions fry would experience in the wild.
Water parameters must be closely monitored from the moment of hatching. Temperature should be maintained within the optimal range for the specific pufferfish species, and ammonia and nitrite levels must remain at zero. Even trace amounts of these compounds can be lethal to newly hatched fry. Perform small, frequent water changes using pre-conditioned water that matches the tank temperature and salinity exactly.
If the parent pufferfish are still present in the tank, it is generally advisable to remove either the parents or the fry to a separate rearing container. Many pufferfish species do not exhibit strong parental care, and some may consume their own young. A dedicated fry tank allows you to control conditions more precisely and reduces the risk of predation.
