Look for fixtures with adjustable color temperature and brightness so you can fine-tune the lighting to suit both your plants and your pufferfish's comfort.

Pufferfish generally prefer moderate to subdued lighting conditions. In the wild, many species inhabit turbid rivers, shaded streams, or reef crevices where direct sunlight is filtered and diffused. Intense overhead lighting without adequate cover can stress pufferfish and cause them to hide for extended periods. Floating plants are an excellent natural light diffuser — species like water lettuce, salvinia, and Amazon frogbit create a canopy of dappled shade that pufferfish find calming while still allowing sufficient light to reach submerged plants below.

A timer or programmable light controller is an essential accessory for any pufferfish tank. Consistent photoperiods of eight to ten hours per day support healthy biological rhythms in both your pufferfish and your tank's plant life. Sudden changes between full darkness and full brightness can startle pufferfish, so fixtures with gradual sunrise and sunset ramp features are particularly valuable. These features slowly increase and decrease light intensity over a period of fifteen to thirty minutes, simulating natural dawn and dusk transitions.

For brackish and marine pufferfish setups, lighting requirements shift based on whether you maintain live corals or anemones alongside your pufferfish. Liquid kits use measured reagent drops and color comparison charts that provide readings accurate enough to detect the small parameter shifts that matter for pufferfish health. Establish a regular testing schedule and stick to it. During the initial cycling period and for the first several months after introducing your pufferfish, test every other day. Cleaning & Maintenance Tools

Routine tank maintenance keeps your pufferfish's environment healthy and requires a specific set of tools. A gravel vacuum — or sand vacuum for tanks with fine substrate — is essential for removing accumulated waste from the substrate during water changes. Pufferfish are messy eaters that leave shell fragments, uneaten food, and waste throughout the tank, and without regular vacuuming this debris breaks down and degrades water quality. Choose a vacuum with an appropriate diameter for your tank size and substrate type — wide-mouth siphons work well for gravel, while narrower attachments prevent sand from being pulled out during cleaning.

Algae scrapers and magnetic glass cleaners keep your viewing panels clear and allow you to observe your pufferfish without obstruction. Magnetic cleaners are the most convenient option for regular maintenance because they allow you to clean the inside glass without putting your hands in the water. Select a magnet appropriate for your glass thickness — too weak and it will not maintain contact, too strong on thin glass and it can scratch. For stubborn algae deposits, a dedicated razor scraper provides more aggressive cleaning power but requires more care to avoid scratching acrylic tanks.

A dedicated set of buckets, hoses, and containers for water changes streamlines the maintenance process and prevents cross-contamination from household chemicals. Never use buckets that have held soaps, detergents, or cleaning products for aquarium water changes — even trace residues can be toxic to pufferfish. Label your aquarium equipment clearly and store it separately from household cleaning supplies. For larger tanks, a water change system that connects directly to a faucet saves enormous time and effort compared to hauling individual buckets.

Filter maintenance tools round out your cleaning kit. Keep spare filter media, replacement impellers, and o-rings on hand so you can service your filtration system without delay when components wear out. Clean mechanical filter media in removed tank water rather than tap water to preserve beneficial bacteria. For canister filters, a dedicated cleaning basin and small brushes for intake tubes and hose connections make the service process much more efficient and thorough.

Feeding Tools & Accessories

Feeding pufferfish requires more specialized equipment than feeding typical community fish. Long aquarium tweezers or feeding tongs are essential tools that allow you to place food precisely, target-feed individual fish in multi-specimen tanks, and hand-feed without putting your fingers within biting range of a powerful pufferfish beak. Stainless steel tweezers in the ten- to twelve-inch range offer the best balance of reach, durability, and control. This is particularly useful for frozen foods that break apart as they thaw and for shell fragments left behind after snail consumption. After feeding, you can easily siphon waste from the dish without disturbing the rest of the substrate.

A turkey baster or pipette is a surprisingly useful feeding tool for pufferfish keepers. These allow you to spot-feed frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and other small food items with precision, directing food exactly where you want it. They are also invaluable for removing small pieces of uneaten food from tight spaces between rocks and decor where a standard siphon cannot reach. Keep a dedicated aquarium-only turkey baster with your tank supplies.

For keepers who breed their own snails or culture live foods, small mesh nets and containers for harvesting and transferring live prey are essential. Fine-mesh nets designed for aquarium use allow you to collect snails from breeding containers without damaging them and transfer them cleanly to your pufferfish's tank. Separate containers for rinsing live foods before feeding reduce the risk of introducing contaminants or unwanted organisms from culture tanks into your main aquarium.

Transport & Quarantine Gear

A properly equipped quarantine tank is one of the most valuable accessories a pufferfish keeper can maintain. New pufferfish should always be quarantined for a minimum of two to four weeks before introduction to an established tank, and a quarantine setup provides a controlled environment for observation, disease treatment, and acclimation. A bare-bottom tank of ten to twenty gallons with a sponge filter, a heater, and a hiding spot is sufficient for quarantine purposes. Keep the setup simple to facilitate observation and cleaning — substrate and elaborate decor are unnecessary and can complicate treatment protocols.

Transporting pufferfish requires extra care compared to most aquarium fish because stress can trigger inflation, which is physically taxing and potentially dangerous if the fish gulps air rather than water. Use opaque bags or containers to reduce visual stress during transport, and ensure the container is filled primarily with water rather than air to minimize the risk of aerial inflation. Double-bagging with insulated packaging protects against temperature drops during transit. For longer trips, battery-operated air pumps provide continuous oxygenation.

Acclimation equipment ensures a smooth transition when introducing pufferfish to new water conditions. Drip acclimation kits — consisting of airline tubing with an adjustable valve — allow you to gradually introduce your tank water into the transport container over a period of one to two hours, giving your pufferfish time to adjust to any differences in temperature, pH, and salinity without shock. This slow acclimation process is especially critical for brackish species, where even small salinity differences between source and destination water can cause significant physiological stress.

Keep a basic fish first aid kit alongside your quarantine supplies. This should include aquarium salt for freshwater setups, a quality water conditioner that neutralizes chlorine, chloramine, and heavy metals, and a broad-spectrum antiparasitic medication suitable for your species. Having treatment supplies on hand before you need them eliminates dangerous delays when health issues arise — pufferfish health can deteriorate rapidly, and same-day treatment availability can be life-saving.

Backup Power & Emergency Supplies

Power outages pose a serious threat to pufferfish tanks because both filtration and temperature regulation cease immediately when electricity fails. A battery-powered air pump is the most essential emergency supply for any pufferfish keeper. These inexpensive devices maintain water oxygenation and surface agitation during outages, preventing the rapid oxygen depletion that can kill fish in enclosed aquariums within hours. Keep a battery-powered air pump and fresh batteries stored near your tank at all times, and test the device periodically to ensure it functions when needed.

For keepers in areas prone to extended power outages, an uninterruptible power supply or small generator capable of running your heater and filter can prevent catastrophic losses. UPS devices designed for aquarium use provide several hours of backup power for essential equipment and switch on automatically when grid power fails. These are particularly valuable for marine and brackish setups where water chemistry instability compounds the risks of equipment failure.

Insulation materials should be part of your emergency kit for temperature management during outages. Styrofoam panels, moving blankets, or even thick towels wrapped around the tank slow heat loss significantly. In winter, chemical hand warmers placed between insulation layers and the tank glass can provide supplemental heat for short-duration outages. Avoid floating hand warmers inside the tank, as the chemicals they contain are toxic to aquatic life.

A supply of pre-mixed water appropriate for your tank's chemistry should always be available. Keep several gallons of dechlorinated water at room temperature — or pre-mixed brackish water for brackish setups — ready for emergency water changes. During power outages, nitrifying bacteria die off as oxygen levels in filter media drop, which can lead to ammonia spikes when power is restored.
