The Paca, Cuniculus paca, is one of the largest rodents in the Neotropics and the sole living member of its genus alongside the closely related Mountain Paca, Cuniculus taczanowskii. Its native range extends from southern Mexico through Central America and across much of South America east of the Andes, reaching as far south as northern Argentina and Paraguay. This vast distribution encompasses an extraordinary variety of habitats, including lowland tropical rainforest, montane cloud forest, gallery forest along river corridors, and seasonally dry deciduous woodland. The species is most abundant in humid forested environments near permanent water sources, reflecting its strong affinity for riparian habitats and its reliance on swimming as an escape strategy from predators.
Pacas belong to the family Cuniculidae, a small and ancient lineage within the infraorder Hystricognathi, which includes other characteristically South American rodents such as capybaras, agoutis, chinchillas, and guinea pigs. The fossil record of cuniculids extends back to the late Miocene epoch, approximately eight to ten million years ago, with ancestral forms appearing in fossil deposits across what is now tropical South America. The evolutionary history of the family is intimately tied to the geological and climatic transformations of the South American continent, including the uplift of the Andes, the formation of the Amazon basin, and the establishment of the Panamanian land bridge roughly three million years ago, which allowed cuniculids to colonize Central America.
The Paca is a physically distinctive animal, immediately recognizable by the four longitudinal rows of pale spots and dashes that run along each flank against a dark brown or reddish-brown background. Adults typically measure twenty-four to thirty inches in body length and weigh between fourteen and thirty-one pounds, with exceptional individuals exceeding that range. The body is stocky and barrel-shaped, with short but powerful limbs, reduced ears, and a vestigial tail that is barely visible externally. The skull is unique among rodents in possessing greatly enlarged zygomatic arches that contain resonating chambers, giving the Paca's head a characteristically broad, heavy appearance and enabling it to produce loud vocalizations including teeth grinding, growling, and a distinctive booming sound.
Ecologically, the Paca occupies a critical role in Neotropical forest ecosystems as both a seed predator and a seed disperser. Its diet consists primarily of fallen fruits, seeds, tubers, and roots, supplemented by leaves and occasionally bark. By consuming and caching large seeds, Pacas influence the recruitment patterns of numerous tree species and contribute to the structural diversity of tropical forests. Their extensive burrow systems, typically dug into stream banks or hillsides with multiple concealed entrances, also create microhabitats used by other species and contribute to soil turnover in the forest understory.
