The capybara, Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, is native to virtually every country in South America east of the Andes, with populations extending from Panama and Colombia in the north through Venezuela, the Guianas, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and into northeastern Argentina. Its range is defined almost entirely by the availability of standing or slow-moving freshwater, as the species is profoundly semi-aquatic in its habits. Capybaras inhabit marshlands, river floodplains, estuarine wetlands, seasonal lagoons, and the densely vegetated margins of lakes and streams. The expansive wetlands of the Brazilian Pantanal, the Venezuelan Llanos, and the Amazonian varzea floodplains represent the species' core habitat, supporting the highest population densities recorded anywhere in its range.
The genus Hydrochoerus belongs to the family Caviidae, making the capybara a close relative of guinea pigs, rock cavies, and the Patagonian mara. Despite its enormous size relative to these cousins, the capybara shares many fundamental caviid traits: continuously growing hypsodont teeth adapted for processing tough grasses, a hindgut fermentation digestive strategy, and a precocial reproductive pattern in which young are born fully furred, open-eyed, and capable of following the herd within hours of birth. The capybara's size, however, is without parallel among living rodents. Adults typically weigh between seventy-seven and one hundred forty-six pounds, with exceptional individuals exceeding one hundred fifty pounds, and they measure forty to fifty-five inches in body length.
The fossil record reveals that the capybara's lineage extends deep into the Cenozoic. During the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs, South America was home to several species of giant caviomorphs, including Josephoartigasia monesi, the largest rodent known to have existed, estimated to have weighed over two thousand pounds. These enormous relatives occupied a range of ecological niches across the continent, and the modern capybara represents the sole surviving lineage of the subfamily Hydrochoerinae. The extinction of these megafaunal rodents, likely driven by climatic shifts and habitat changes during the late Pleistocene, left the capybara as the largest rodent on the planet, a distinction it has held for roughly ten thousand years.
Capybaras are obligately social animals that live in groups ranging from as few as three or four individuals in less productive habitats to herds of forty or more in resource-rich floodplain environments. During the dry season, when available water contracts into smaller areas, herds may temporarily coalesce into aggregations of one hundred or more animals around remaining water sources. This social structure is organized around a dominant male that defends mating access to a group of females, with subordinate males occupying peripheral positions within the herd hierarchy. The species' gregarious nature has proven to be one of its most endearing traits to human observers and is a central factor in the capybara's modern cultural appeal.
