The Severe Macaw (Ara severus), also widely known as the Chestnut-fronted Macaw, is native to a broad swath of Central and South America stretching from eastern Panama through Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and into central Brazil. Within this range the species occupies a variety of forested and semi-open habitats, including tropical lowland rainforest, gallery forest along rivers, seasonally flooded varzea, and the transitional edges where dense woodland gives way to savanna or agricultural clearings. It is one of the largest members of the so-called mini macaw group, birds that share the structural proportions and behavioral traits of the great macaws but in a noticeably smaller package.
Ara severus is primarily a bird of the forest canopy and mid-story, though it regularly descends to clay licks and riverbanks to consume mineral-rich soil, a behavior shared with many Neotropical parrots. Its diet in the wild centers on seeds, nuts, fruits, berries, and flowers, with a particular fondness for palm fruits and the hard-shelled seeds of leguminous trees. The powerful beak, disproportionately large relative to body size, is adapted for cracking these tough food sources, giving the Severe Macaw access to nutritional niches that smaller parrots cannot exploit as efficiently.
Socially, wild Severe Macaws are gregarious birds that typically move in small flocks of ten to twenty individuals outside the breeding season. Pairs bond strongly and are often seen flying side by side within the flock, maintaining close physical contact during rest periods. Nesting occurs in natural tree cavities, frequently in dead palms or large hardwoods, and pairs may return to the same nesting site across multiple breeding seasons. Clutch sizes are typically two to three eggs, with incubation lasting roughly 26 to 28 days.
The species' range overlaps with several other macaw species, including the Blue-and-yellow Macaw, the Red-bellied Macaw, and the Scarlet Macaw, though competitive exclusion tends to be minimal owing to differences in body size, foraging strategy, and preferred nesting substrates. This ecological coexistence has allowed the Severe Macaw to maintain stable populations across much of its historical range, although localized declines have occurred in regions where deforestation and trapping pressure have been most intense.
