Many Severe Macaws experience annual hormonal periods, typically during spring months, when they may become unpredictably aggressive, intensely territorial, and more prone to biting even trusted family members. During these periods, preventing all children's direct interaction with the bird may be necessary for safety. Parents must understand, prepare for, and appropriately manage these behavioral cycles.

Interactions between Severe Macaws and other household pets require extreme caution and must never occur unsupervised under any circumstances. Dogs and cats are predators with instinctive prey drives that can activate suddenly and unpredictably, even in pets with years of apparent disinterest in birds. A single moment of predatory behavior, even playful pouncing, can be instantly fatal to a bird. Conversely, Severe Macaws have powerful beaks and bold, fearless personalities that may lead them to attack or tease dogs and cats, potentially provoking defensive reactions or creating dangerous situations for all animals involved.

Strict separation protocols must be maintained without exception when households include dogs or cats. The bird should be housed in a room where pets cannot access the cage at any time, even when owners are absent. Out-of-cage time should occur exclusively in separate, pet-free rooms with closed, secure doors. Never allow pets and birds to interact directly regardless of how well-behaved, gentle, or trustworthy the pets appear. Many preventable tragedies occur annually when owners become complacent about safety protocols after periods of seeming peaceful coexistence. One moment of inattention or broken routine can result in death or serious injury.

Small mammals including rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets, rats, and mice must be kept completely separated from Severe Macaws. These animals can frighten the bird with their movements and scents, while the bird's loud vocalizations may cause extreme stress to prey animals. Additionally, the Severe Macaw's powerful beak could easily kill small mammals if access occurred. Zoonotic diseases can sometimes transmit between species through proximity or shared environments.

Other birds may be compatible with Severe Macaws depending strongly on individual personalities, proper introduction protocols, adequate space provision, and careful ongoing monitoring. However, Severe Macaws can be dominant, territorial, and aggressive toward other birds, particularly during hormonal breeding seasons. Their bold, feisty nature means they may bully birds much larger than themselves or refuse to tolerate any avian companions. Housing multiple birds together requires very large cages or aviaries, extremely careful supervised introduction over extended periods, and willingness to permanently separate birds if aggression, bullying, or incompatibility develops. Some Severe Macaws strongly prefer being only birds in households, bonding exclusively with human companions, while others accept or even enjoy avian companionship. Never assume compatibility without extensive careful observation. Even birds that initially get along may develop conflicts requiring permanent separation.
