For individual shipments, such as birds being sent to a buyer or transferred to a one-loft race facility, single-bird or small-group shipping boxes are the appropriate choice. These are typically constructed from sturdy corrugated cardboard with ventilation holes punched at regular intervals, an absorbent lining on the floor, and a secure closure mechanism. The box must be large enough for the bird to stand, turn, and shift its position but not so large that the bird is thrown about during movement. A general guideline is that a single-bird shipping box should measure approximately twelve inches long, eight inches wide, and eight inches tall, though larger birds may require modestly bigger dimensions.
Lining the floor of any transport container is essential for hygiene and the bird's physical comfort. Absorbent materials such as shredded paper, wood shavings, or commercially produced absorbent pads help manage moisture from droppings and reduce the risk of the bird slipping on a smooth surface during vehicle acceleration or braking. Some fanciers favor paper-based linings because they are lightweight and disposable, while others prefer wood shavings for their superior absorbency. Regardless of the material chosen, the lining should be thick enough to cushion the bird's feet and keel during transit and should be replaced if the journey extends beyond a few hours.
Ventilation is the non-negotiable requirement of any pigeon transport container. Pigeons generate considerable body heat, and a crate or box with insufficient airflow can become dangerously hot within minutes, particularly during warm weather or when multiple birds are housed together. Every surface of the container should contribute to air exchange, and fanciers should test their crates before use by placing a hand over the ventilation openings to verify that air moves freely through the enclosure. In hot conditions, additional precautions such as placing frozen water bottles near but not inside the crate, positioning the crate in the shade, and avoiding transport during the hottest hours of the day can prevent heat-related illness or death.
