Space Requirements

Ring-Necked Snakes are small, fossorial snakes that spend the vast majority of their time hidden under cover objects, leaf litter, or burrowed into damp substrate. Because they rarely exceed fifteen inches in total length, they do not require the expansive enclosures associated with larger snake species. A ten-gallon glass terrarium or an enclosure with roughly equivalent floor space — approximately twenty by ten inches — provides adequate room for a single adult. Larger is fine as long as the additional space is well-furnished with hides and cover.

Floor space matters far more than vertical height for this species. Ring-Necked Snakes are ground-dwellers, not climbers, and a tall enclosure without sufficient horizontal area and ground-level enrichment will leave the snake stressed and exposed. Aim for an enclosure that is wider and longer rather than tall, with a height of eight to twelve inches being sufficient. This also makes it easier to maintain the high humidity levels that Ring-Necked Snakes require.

If keeping more than one Ring-Necked Snake — which is feasible given their generally tolerant disposition toward conspecifics — increase the enclosure size proportionally and provide multiple hide spots to reduce competition for preferred microclimates. A twenty-gallon long enclosure can comfortably house two to three adults, provided there are enough hides, moisture gradients, and feeding stations to prevent resource crowding.

Avoid enclosures with large mesh or screen tops that allow excessive airflow. While ventilation is important, Ring-Necked Snakes need consistently high humidity — generally between 60 and 80 percent — and a fully screened top will dry out the enclosure far too quickly. Enclosures with solid tops and small ventilation strips or adjustable vents are far better suited to maintaining the damp conditions this species requires.

Enclosure Types

Glass terrariums with front-opening doors are a popular choice for Ring-Necked Snakes. They offer good visibility for observation, are widely available, and their solid glass walls help retain humidity better than screen-sided enclosures. Front-opening doors are particularly convenient because they allow access without reaching in from above — an approach that can startle a shy, fossorial species accustomed to aerial predators. Look for models with tight-fitting doors and minimal gaps, as Ring-Necked Snakes are surprisingly adept escape artists given their slender bodies.

Plastic tub setups are another excellent option, especially for keepers housing multiple animals or prioritizing humidity retention over aesthetics. Opaque-sided plastic tubs with secure snap-on lids maintain humidity exceptionally well and reduce visual stress for the snake. Drill or melt small ventilation holes along the upper sides of the tub — enough to allow air exchange but not so many that humidity plummets. This setup is inexpensive, easy to clean, and highly effective for a species that spends most of its time hidden anyway.

PVC and composite enclosures designed for reptile keeping offer a middle ground between glass terrariums and plastic tubs. These enclosures are lightweight, retain heat and humidity efficiently, and are available in low-profile configurations well suited to fossorial species. Many models include built-in cord ports for heating elements and lighting, which simplifies setup. The higher upfront cost is offset by durability and long-term performance.

Avoid wire or mesh cages entirely. These are designed for species that require high airflow, and they are completely unsuitable for Ring-Necked Snakes. Mesh walls make it impossible to maintain adequate humidity, expose the snake to drafts, and provide surfaces that can abrade the snake's delicate scales. Any enclosure you select should prioritize moisture retention and security above all else.

Substrate & Bedding

Substrate selection is one of the most critical housing decisions for Ring-Necked Snakes, because these snakes live in and on their substrate more intimately than most species. A moisture-retentive, naturalistic substrate that allows burrowing is essential. Coconut fiber — sold as compressed bricks or loose bags — is a widely used base substrate that holds moisture well, resists mold when kept at appropriate dampness levels, and supports burrowing behavior. It can be used alone or mixed with other materials for a more complex substrate layer.

Sphagnum moss layered over or mixed into the coconut fiber creates excellent moisture pockets and mimics the damp leaf litter habitat Ring-Necked Snakes occupy in the wild. A layer of dried leaf litter on top of the moss and fiber further enhances the naturalistic feel and provides additional cover. Oak and magnolia leaves are popular choices because they break down slowly and do not acidify the substrate as rapidly as some softwood materials.

Substrate depth should be at least two to three inches to allow burrowing. Ring-Necked Snakes will spend significant time partially or fully buried, and a substrate layer that is too shallow forces them to remain on the surface where they feel exposed. Deeper substrate zones — four to five inches in one area of the enclosure — give the snake the option to burrow deeper in the cooler, moister part of the habitat.

Avoid substrates that are dusty, abrasive, or excessively drying. Sand, cedar shavings, pine shavings, and reptile carpet are all poor choices for this species. Sand does not retain moisture and can cause impaction if ingested during feeding. Cedar and pine contain volatile oils that are toxic to reptiles. Reptile carpet does not allow burrowing and dries out quickly, eliminating two of the most important substrate functions for a fossorial insectivore.

Hides & Cover Objects

Ring-Necked Snakes are among the most secretive snake species commonly kept in captivity, and hides are not optional enrichment — they are an absolute necessity. Without adequate cover, these snakes experience chronic stress that suppresses feeding, increases susceptibility to illness, and can significantly shorten their lifespan. At minimum, provide two hides — one on the warmer side of the enclosure and one on the cooler side — so the snake can thermoregulate without sacrificing its sense of security.

Flat hides that sit close to the substrate surface are preferred over tall, domed designs. In the wild, Ring-Necked Snakes shelter under flat rocks, bark slabs, and fallen logs that press against the ground, and they seek the snug, body-contact feel of a tight-fitting cover. Cork bark flats, thin stone slabs, and commercially available low-profile reptile hides all work well. The hide should be just large enough for the snake to coil inside with its body contacting the walls and ceiling — spacious hides feel less secure to this species.

Live or artificial leaf litter scattered across the substrate provides secondary cover that allows the snake to move around the enclosure while remaining partially concealed. This layered approach to cover — primary hides plus scattered surface debris — creates an environment where the snake feels secure everywhere, not just inside a single hide box. Keepers who provide this kind of distributed cover typically observe more natural behavior and better feeding responses.

Moisture hides — small enclosed hides with damp sphagnum moss inside — serve a dual purpose. They provide a humid microclimate that supports healthy shedding and hydration, and they offer a particularly attractive retreat during the dry periods that can occur even in well-maintained enclosures. Place the moisture hide on the cooler side of the enclosure to prevent the damp moss from becoming a bacterial incubator under direct heat.

Temperature & Humidity Control

Ring-Necked Snakes are temperate-zone species that do not require the high basking temperatures associated with tropical or desert snakes. The warm side of the enclosure should sit between 72 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit, with the cool side dropping to the mid-to-low 60s. Nighttime temperatures can safely dip into the upper 50s, which mirrors the natural conditions these snakes experience in the wild. Overheating is a more common and more dangerous problem than underheating for this species — sustained temperatures above 80 degrees can cause heat stress and refusal to feed.

Low-wattage under-tank heat mats or heat tape applied to one end of the enclosure are the safest and most effective heating options. These provide gentle belly heat that warms the substrate from below without creating hot spots on the surface or drying out the enclosure. Always use a thermostat to regulate any heat source — even a small heat mat can overshoot safe temperatures in a compact enclosure. Overhead heat lamps are generally unnecessary and can dry the enclosure excessively, though a very low-wattage ceramic heat emitter can be used if ambient room temperatures are unusually cold.

Humidity is arguably even more important than temperature for Ring-Necked Snakes. The enclosure should maintain ambient humidity between 60 and 80 percent, with higher levels available in the moisture hide. Misting the enclosure lightly once or twice daily, maintaining damp substrate, and using a partial cover over any screen top all help sustain appropriate levels. A digital hygrometer placed at substrate level — not mounted on the wall above the substrate — provides the most accurate reading of the humidity the snake actually experiences.

Ventilation and humidity must be balanced carefully. Stagnant, overly wet conditions promote mold and bacterial growth, while too much airflow dries out the habitat. The goal is gently circulating air in an enclosure that stays consistently damp but not waterlogged. If you notice condensation covering all walls constantly, reduce misting slightly or increase ventilation marginally. If the hygrometer regularly drops below 60 percent, reduce ventilation or add a larger water dish to increase passive evaporation.

Multi-Animal Setups

Ring-Necked Snakes are among the more communal snake species and are frequently kept in small groups without significant aggression issues. In the wild, they are often found in aggregations under shared cover objects, particularly during cooler months. This natural tolerance makes group housing feasible, though it still requires thoughtful setup to ensure each animal has access to resources and adequate personal space.

The most important consideration in a multi-animal enclosure is hide density. Each snake should have access to at least two hides it can use without displacing another animal, which means a group of three snakes needs a minimum of six well-distributed hides. Dominant individuals may claim preferred microclimates — typically the warmest or most humid hides — so providing redundant options at similar temperature and humidity levels prevents subordinate animals from being forced into suboptimal conditions.

Feeding in a communal setup requires extra attention. Ring-Necked Snakes can be competitive around food, and feeding multiple animals in a shared space risks one snake consuming more than its share while others go without. Many keepers temporarily separate animals into individual containers for feeding, then return them to the communal enclosure after each snake has eaten. This approach also makes it easier to track individual food intake and identify any animal that is consistently refusing meals.

Monitor body condition and behavior closely in group setups. Signs that a communal arrangement is not working include persistent hiding by one animal while others are active, weight loss in subordinate individuals, visible bite marks or tail injuries, and repeated food refusal. If any of these appear, separate the affected animal into its own enclosure. Group housing works well for Ring-Necked Snakes in general, but individual temperament varies, and not every animal thrives in a social setting.
