Gopher Snakes are among the more active and inquisitive colubrid species, which makes them particularly good candidates for enrichment. In the wild, they cover significant ground while foraging, navigate complex terrain, and interact with a wide range of textures, temperatures, and scents. A captive environment that offers only a flat substrate and two hides fails to engage the behavioral repertoire this species is capable of.

The goal of enrichment is not to entertain the keeper but to promote natural behavior, reduce stress indicators like repetitive glass surfing or excessive hiding, and support physical fitness. Branches should be at least as thick as the snake's body to provide a stable perching surface.

Snakes experience the world primarily through chemoreception — their forked tongue and vomeronasal organ provide a detailed chemical map of their surroundings. Introducing novel, safe scents into the enclosure is one of the most underutilized forms of enrichment for captive snakes. A small piece of shed skin from another snake species, a paper towel rubbed on a non-toxic substrate from outdoors, or a leaf from a pesticide-free garden can all provoke intense investigative tongue-flicking and sustained exploratory movement.

Scent trails can be created by dragging a thawed prey item along a path through the enclosure before placing it in the feeding area. This transforms a routine feeding event into a tracking exercise that engages the snake's natural foraging instincts. The snake follows the chemical trail, investigating the route with heightened alertness, and the act of locating the prey becomes enriching in itself.

Textural variety provides tactile enrichment that complements scent-based stimulation. Including surfaces of different roughness, temperature, and moisture levels — smooth river stones on the warm side, rough cork bark in the middle, damp moss in a humid hide — gives the snake a range of physical sensations as it moves through the enclosure. These textural contrasts also aid in the shedding process by providing natural abrasion points.

Controlled outdoor exposure during warm weather — using a secure, escape-proof outdoor enclosure or supervised handling in a contained area — provides a flood of novel sensory input including natural sunlight, wind, ambient sounds, and outdoor scents. Sessions should be brief, closely monitored, and conducted only when temperatures are within the safe range for the species. This level of stimulation can be highly beneficial but should never compromise security.

Supervised Handling as Enrichment

Regular, gentle handling provides a form of enrichment that no enclosure modification can replicate. The experience of navigating a keeper's hands and arms, encountering different textures of clothing, and processing the scents and temperatures of the household environment engages the snake's sensory systems in ways that captive enclosures cannot fully simulate.

Gopher Snakes are generally tolerant of handling and often become noticeably calm and exploratory during sessions. Short, frequent handling sessions of ten to fifteen minutes several times a week are more beneficial than infrequent marathon sessions. Effective snake enrichment does not require expensive commercial products. Some of the best enrichment tools are everyday items repurposed with a little creativity. Cardboard tubes from paper towel rolls make excellent temporary tunnels for juvenile Gopher Snakes, and larger mailing tubes work for adults. These can be placed in the enclosure for a few days, allowed to absorb the snake's scent, and then replaced with fresh ones to reset the novelty factor.

Crumpled kraft paper or paper bags placed in the enclosure create rustling, movable cover that the snake can push through and investigate. The sound and texture are novel, and many Gopher Snakes will spend extended periods navigating through and under paper obstacles. Moving hides to different positions, changing the angle of a branch, or shifting the water dish to a new location forces the snake to reorient and re-explore its territory. Natural materials collected responsibly from pesticide-free outdoor areas can supplement commercial décor. Smooth river stones, dried leaves, small pieces of untreated wood, and patches of dried grass all add textural and olfactory variety. These materials should be sanitized before use and replaced regularly to prevent mold or pest introduction. The key principle is variety and rotation — any enrichment item loses its value once it becomes a permanent, unchanging fixture.
