Space Requirements

Gopher Snakes are active, semi-terrestrial colubrids that need more floor space than many keepers initially expect. An adult Gopher Snake measuring four to six feet in length requires an enclosure with a footprint of at least four feet long by two feet deep. Taller enclosures are acceptable and even beneficial, as Gopher Snakes will explore vertical space when branches and shelving are provided, but floor area should always be the primary consideration.

Hatchlings and juveniles can be started in smaller enclosures — a ten- to twenty-gallon equivalent is appropriate for the first year — but keepers should plan for the adult-sized setup well in advance. Housing a small snake in an oversized enclosure is generally less problematic than keeping a growing snake in a space it has already outgrown. That said, very young snakes may feel insecure in a cavernous enclosure, so providing ample cover and tight hides is essential if starting with a larger setup.

The enclosure should allow for a clear thermal gradient from one end to the other, with enough linear distance that the snake can effectively thermoregulate. A tank that is too short front to back compresses the gradient and makes it difficult to maintain distinct warm and cool zones. This is one of the most common mistakes in Gopher Snake housing — the enclosure may technically meet minimum volume requirements but fail to provide functional temperature separation.

Gopher Snakes are known escape artists with surprising strength for their size. Any enclosure must have a secure, locking lid or door mechanism. Sliding glass doors should have a pin or lock, and screen tops need clips rated for the weight of the snake pressing against them. An escaped Gopher Snake can disappear into wall cavities, ductwork, or furniture and may be extremely difficult to recover.

Enclosure Types

Glass terrariums with front-opening doors are a popular choice for Gopher Snakes because they provide excellent visibility, allow easy access for maintenance, and retain humidity reasonably well when paired with a solid or partially covered screen top. Front-opening designs are less stressful for the snake than top-opening lids, since approaching from above mimics a predator's angle and can trigger defensive posturing in some individuals.

PVC and molded plastic enclosures are the preferred option among experienced keepers and breeders. These units hold heat and humidity more efficiently than glass, are lighter, stack well for multi-snake collections, and are available with built-in channels for wiring and thermostats. The initial cost is higher, but the long-term durability and energy savings often offset the investment.

Converted storage tubs — often called rack systems when stacked — are a functional choice for breeders or keepers maintaining multiple animals. While they lack the display appeal of glass or PVC enclosures, they provide excellent security, consistent humidity, and easy cleaning. The key requirements are adequate ventilation holes, a secure latching mechanism, and opaque walls that help the snake feel secure.

Wooden vivariums with glass fronts are occasionally used but require careful sealing to prevent moisture damage and mold growth. Any wood exposed to the interior should be sealed with a non-toxic, waterproof coating. These enclosures can work well in dry climates where excess humidity is not a concern, but they demand more maintenance than PVC or glass alternatives.

Substrate & Flooring

Substrate choice affects humidity regulation, ease of cleaning, and the snake's ability to burrow — an activity Gopher Snakes engage in frequently. Aspen shavings are the most widely recommended substrate for this species because they are absorbent, allow burrowing, produce minimal dust when kept dry, and are readily available. A layer of three to four inches gives the snake room to tunnel without reaching the enclosure floor.

Coconut fiber and cypress mulch are suitable alternatives, particularly in environments where slightly higher humidity is needed. These substrates hold moisture better than aspen, which can be useful during shedding cycles. However, they should not be kept perpetually damp, as sustained wet conditions can promote scale rot and respiratory issues in a species adapted to semi-arid habitats.

Cedar and pine shavings must be avoided entirely. The aromatic oils in these softwoods are toxic to reptiles and can cause respiratory distress, neurological symptoms, and death with prolonged exposure. This is a well-documented hazard, and no amount of airing out or kiln-drying fully eliminates the risk. Always verify the wood species before purchasing bulk shavings.

Paper towels or unprinted newspaper can serve as a temporary substrate for quarantine enclosures, hatchlings, or snakes recovering from illness. They offer zero enrichment value and no burrowing opportunity, but they make monitoring fecal output and detecting mites far easier than particulate substrates. Many breeders use paper products for the first few months of a hatchling's life before transitioning to aspen.

Heating & Lighting

Gopher Snakes require a warm basking zone of approximately eighty-five to ninety degrees Fahrenheit and a cool side maintained in the mid-seventies. This gradient allows the snake to shuttle between zones and regulate its own body temperature, which is critical for digestion, immune function, and overall metabolic health. Nighttime temperatures can drop into the low seventies without issue, mimicking the natural diurnal cycle these snakes experience in the wild.

Under-tank heat mats connected to a thermostat are the most common primary heat source for Gopher Snake enclosures. The heat mat should cover roughly one-third of the enclosure floor on the warm side. A thermostat is not optional — unregulated heat mats can reach surface temperatures well above safe levels and cause thermal burns, even through substrate. Proportional or pulse-proportional thermostats provide the most stable temperature control.

Overhead heating elements such as ceramic heat emitters or radiant heat panels are excellent supplemental or primary heat sources, especially in larger enclosures where under-tank heating alone may not achieve adequate ambient air temperatures. These devices must also be controlled by a thermostat and protected by a guard or cage if mounted inside the enclosure to prevent direct contact burns.

Gopher Snakes do not require specialized UVB lighting to survive, but a growing body of evidence suggests that low-level UVB exposure benefits colubrid health, activity levels, and coloration. A low-output UVB tube mounted inside or above the enclosure and run on a ten- to twelve-hour photoperiod can be a worthwhile addition. At minimum, a basic day-night light cycle using ambient room lighting or a simple LED fixture supports natural circadian rhythms.

Hides & Interior Layout

A minimum of two hides — one on the warm side and one on the cool side — is a non-negotiable element of any Gopher Snake enclosure. Hides should be snug enough that the snake's body makes contact with the walls on multiple sides. An oversized hide does not provide the same sense of security and may result in a snake that spends excessive time exposed and stressed rather than resting comfortably.

Commercially available reptile hides come in a range of materials including resin, ceramic, and molded plastic. Half-log hides, cave-style hides, and stacked rock formations all work well as long as they are stable and cannot collapse onto the snake. Any stacked décor should be siliconed or otherwise secured to prevent shifting when the snake pushes against it during exploration.

Beyond the basic two-hide minimum, additional cover in the form of cork bark, artificial plants, and climbing branches significantly improves the quality of the enclosure. Gopher Snakes are more active and display a wider range of natural behaviors when their environment offers complexity. A barren tank with two hides and nothing else is functional but not enriching, and behavioral signs of stress — such as repetitive glass surfing — are more common in minimally furnished setups.

A humid hide filled with damp sphagnum moss should be available during shedding periods. This microclimate retreat helps the snake achieve a clean, one-piece shed by softening the old skin layer. The humid hide can be placed on the warm side to encourage evaporation and should be checked regularly for mold growth. Between sheds, it can be removed or left dry depending on the ambient humidity in the enclosure.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Spot cleaning should be performed as soon as waste is noticed. Gopher Snakes tend to establish preferred defecation sites within their enclosure, which makes daily spot checks efficient. Remove soiled substrate, replace it with fresh material, and sanitize the immediate area with a reptile-safe disinfectant. Prompt waste removal prevents bacterial and fungal buildup and keeps odor under control.

A full substrate change and deep clean should be conducted every four to six weeks, depending on enclosure size and the snake's feeding schedule. During a deep clean, remove the snake to a secure temporary container, discard all substrate, and wash every surface and piece of décor with a reptile-safe disinfectant or a dilute bleach solution followed by a thorough rinse and complete drying. Residual chemical fumes from incomplete rinsing can irritate a snake's respiratory system.

Water dishes should be cleaned and refilled every one to two days. Gopher Snakes will occasionally soak in their water dish — particularly before a shed — and may defecate in it. A heavy ceramic dish is ideal because it resists tipping and maintains a stable temperature. Dishes should be scrubbed with hot water and a brush dedicated to reptile use, avoiding household dish soaps unless they are thoroughly rinsed away.

Enclosure hardware — thermostats, probes, heat mats, and light fixtures — should be inspected monthly for wear, fraying, or malfunction. A failed thermostat can result in lethal overheating within hours, so redundancy in temperature monitoring is advisable. Keeping a backup thermostat and a standalone digital thermometer with a probe provides a safety net against equipment failure.
