While a small amount of citrus is unlikely to be fatal, it can cause oral discomfort, excessive salivation, and diarrhea that leads to dehydration in a small animal. Grapes and raisins are another fruit category that warrants caution, as they have been definitively linked to acute kidney failure in some mammalian species and their safety for marsupials has not been established.

Processed human foods, including deli meats, cheese, bread, pasta, crackers, chips, and sweetened cereals, are inappropriate for Short-tailed Opossums on multiple levels. These foods contain salt levels, preservative loads, and simple carbohydrate densities that far exceed what this species can safely metabolize. Even foods that seem harmless, such as plain cooked rice or a small piece of bread, offer no nutritional value to an insectivorous marsupial and simply displace more appropriate foods from the daily intake. Wild-caught insects should also be avoided entirely, as they may carry parasites, pesticide residues, or heavy metal contamination from their environment that cannot be detected visually and could cause acute or chronic toxicity.
