The Short-tailed Opossum, Monodelphis domestica, is a marsupial whose dietary requirements differ substantially from those of the placental rodents most commonly kept as small pets. In the wild, these opossums are primarily insectivorous with strong omnivorous tendencies, consuming a diet dominated by invertebrates, supplemented with fruit, small vertebrates, eggs, and carrion when available. Their digestive physiology reflects this evolutionary heritage, with a relatively short gastrointestinal tract optimized for processing animal protein and simple sugars rather than the complex plant fibers that sustain herbivorous species. Replicating the nutritional breadth of their wild diet in captivity is the single most important factor in preventing the chronic health problems that shorten the lives of many pet opossums.
Protein is the cornerstone of the Short-tailed Opossum diet and should constitute approximately forty to fifty percent of total dry matter intake. The majority of this protein must come from animal-based sources, as the amino acid profiles found in insect and vertebrate tissues are fundamentally different from those in plant proteins. Taurine, an amino acid that many mammals synthesize internally, appears to be required at higher dietary levels in marsupials, making animal-source protein even more critical. A diet deficient in quality animal protein will eventually manifest as muscle wasting, poor coat condition, immune suppression, and reproductive failure.
Fat requirements are moderate, generally falling between eight and fifteen percent of the diet by dry weight. Wild Short-tailed Opossums experience seasonal fluctuations in food availability, and their metabolism is adapted to store and mobilize fat reserves efficiently. In captivity, where food is constantly available and physical activity is reduced, chronically elevated fat intake leads rapidly to obesity and its associated complications, including hepatic lipidosis, cardiovascular strain, and reduced mobility. Balancing fat intake requires careful selection of both the base diet and the insect species offered as supplements.
Calcium metabolism presents a particular challenge in captive marsupials. Short-tailed Opossums require a dietary calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of approximately one-point-five to one or two to one for proper skeletal maintenance and metabolic function. Most commercially available feeder insects are severely calcium-deficient unless gut-loaded with calcium-rich substrates prior to feeding. Without deliberate calcium supplementation through dusting, gut-loading, or dietary additives, captive opossums are at high risk for metabolic bone disease, a progressive and potentially fatal condition that weakens the skeletal system and disrupts neuromuscular function.
