Prevost's Squirrels, classified as Callosciurus prevostii, are medium-sized tree squirrels native to the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia, ranging across Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. In the wild, their diet is broadly omnivorous with a strong emphasis on plant matter, including ripe and unripe fruits, nuts, seeds, flowers, bark, and young leaf shoots. They also consume insects, insect larvae, bird eggs, and occasionally small vertebrates when the opportunity presents itself. This dietary breadth means that captive feeding programs must deliver a wide spectrum of nutrients to replicate what the animal would encounter across its native habitat, where seasonal availability naturally rotates the balance of macronutrients and micronutrients throughout the year.
The protein requirements for Prevost's Squirrels are moderate compared to strictly insectivorous small mammals but higher than those of purely herbivorous rodents. A target of roughly twelve to eighteen percent protein by dry weight in the overall diet supports lean muscle maintenance, healthy coat condition, and reproductive function without overtaxing the kidneys and liver. Unlike sugar gliders or hedgehogs, which require consistent high-protein insect-based diets, Prevost's Squirrels derive most of their protein from nuts, seeds, and occasional animal matter, making their nutritional profile closer to that of other Callosciurus species than to the insectivores they are sometimes mistakenly grouped with in captive care literature.
Fat content in the captive diet should be carefully managed. In the wild, Prevost's Squirrels expend enormous amounts of energy through constant arboreal movement, leaping between tree canopies, and foraging across large territories. Captive animals, even those housed in spacious enclosures, cannot match this level of caloric expenditure. A diet overly rich in high-fat nuts such as macadamias, Brazil nuts, or sunflower seeds will quickly lead to obesity, fatty liver disease, and cardiovascular stress. Fat should constitute roughly five to ten percent of the total diet, with the higher end reserved for breeding females or animals housed in cooler environments where additional caloric intake supports thermoregulation.
Calcium metabolism is a concern that applies to all captive squirrels but is particularly relevant for Prevost's Squirrels because of their long lifespan and the cumulative effects of chronic dietary imbalances. Many nuts and seeds are high in phosphorus relative to calcium, and a diet that relies too heavily on these items without compensatory calcium supplementation will gradually deplete skeletal calcium reserves. Metabolic bone disease in squirrels develops insidiously, often presenting no obvious external symptoms until the animal suffers a pathological fracture or develops visible jaw swelling from dental root absorption. A calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of at least one-point-five to one across the total diet is the minimum target recommended by exotic veterinary specialists.
