The Dwarf Campbell Hamster is a small granivore-omnivore that evolved foraging the dry steppes of central Asia, where calorie-dense seeds, occasional insects, and sparse green matter formed the bulk of the diet. In captivity those instincts remain, which means a Campbell will preferentially pick high-fat seeds out of any mix and ignore the rest if given the chance. A properly balanced daily ration sits in the range of roughly 16 to 19 percent protein, 4 to 7 percent fat, and 8 to 15 percent fiber, with the remainder coming from complex carbohydrates and trace minerals.
What sets the Campbell apart from most other pet rodents is a genetic predisposition to diabetes mellitus that has been documented across multiple breeding lines. This single fact should shape every food purchase you make for this species. Sugar — including the natural sugars in fruit, honey-coated treats, corn, and sweet root vegetables — can trigger or accelerate disease in animals that are otherwise outwardly healthy. Reading ingredient labels for hidden sweeteners is not optional with this animal.
Protein needs are slightly higher than for Syrian hamsters because Campbells are more active gram-for-gram and have a faster metabolism. Small amounts of animal protein in the form of mealworms, crickets, or boiled egg white round out a diet that would otherwise lean too heavily on plant material. Water intake is modest but constant, and clean fresh water should always be available regardless of how much moist food the animal receives.
Finally, foraging itself is a nutritional need. A Campbell that simply eats from a bowl loses both physical activity and mental stimulation. Scattering food across the enclosure, hiding it in foraging toys, and burying it in deep substrate are not optional enrichments — they are how this species was designed to eat.
