Water delivery is the single most consequential accessory decision for a Campbell. Sipper bottles remain the default choice in most setups because they keep water clean, prevent substrate contamination, and allow easy volume monitoring. A good bottle for this species holds 4 to 8 ounces, has a stainless steel ball valve at the tip, and mounts inside the cage at a height the animal can reach comfortably while standing. Glass bottles last longer than plastic and resist chewing; plastic bottles are lighter and easier to hang but can develop biofilm faster.

Water bowls are an alternative gaining traction in the husbandry community. A shallow heavy ceramic dish, positioned away from the wheel and away from substrate-disturbing toys, more closely matches how the animal would drink in the wild and avoids the small risk of ball-valve failure that can leave a hamster without water overnight. The tradeoffs are substrate contamination and the need to refresh water at least daily. Many keepers offer both and let the animal choose.

Food dishes for this species are largely optional because scatter-feeding and foraging delivery are preferable to bowl feeding. When a dish is wanted — for measured pellet portions, for example — a heavy ceramic or stoneware dish that cannot be tipped is the right choice. Plastic dishes get chewed and flipped; lightweight dishes get buried in substrate. Position the dish near but not directly under the water source to keep food dry.

Replacement and cleaning frequency matters more than purchase price. Water bottles should be emptied, refilled, and externally rinsed daily; the inside should be brush-cleaned weekly to prevent biofilm buildup. Food dishes are washed weekly with hot water and an unscented mild detergent, then thoroughly dried before reuse. Avoid scented dish soaps that can leave residue an attentive hamster will detect and reject.

Grooming Tools

Campbell Hamsters are largely self-grooming and require very little human intervention in routine coat care. The species spends a noticeable fraction of its waking time washing, and a healthy adult will keep its coat clean without help. The exceptions are sand bath provision, occasional spot cleaning, and the very rare case of a soiled coat that cannot self-clean — usually a sign of underlying illness that deserves a veterinary visit rather than a bath.

A sand bath is the single grooming accessory every Campbell setup should include. A shallow open dish, four to six inches across, filled with one inch of chinchilla-grade dust-extracted sand, gives the animal an outlet for natural bathing behavior that helps regulate skin oils and remove loose substrate from the coat. Sand should be replaced every one to two weeks; daily light sifting to remove waste extends usable life between changes.

Do not use calcium-fortified reptile sand, scented bath sands, or any product marketed as dust for chinchillas in its pure powdered form. The first contains supplements that are problematic if ingested; the second carries fragrance compounds that irritate respiratory tissue; the third is too fine for hamsters and can cause respiratory and ocular irritation. Plain washed children's play sand, properly sterilized by baking, is an acceptable budget substitute provided it is genuinely fine-grained and dust-free.

Brushes and combs are unnecessary for the smooth standard Campbell coat. For occasional spot cleaning of a sticky food smear, a slightly damp cotton swab applied gently and briefly is sufficient. Full water baths are essentially never appropriate for hamsters of any species — the stress of immersion, the difficulty of full drying, and the disruption of natural skin oils all cause more harm than the cleaning could justify.

Carriers & Travel

Travel for a Campbell Hamster falls into two distinct categories with very different equipment needs. The first is short-distance transport — a veterinary visit, a move between rooms, a brief stay with a sitter — where a small dedicated carrier is appropriate. The second is long-distance travel of more than a few hours, which is genuinely stressful for this species and should be avoided when possible.

A proper carrier for short trips is a small ventilated plastic container with a secure latching lid, dimensioned roughly 8 by 6 by 6 inches. Wire bird-style cages are unsuitable because they expose the animal to air movement and sound that worsen stress. Cardboard boxes work in a pinch but a Campbell can chew through cardboard in surprisingly little time. The carrier should contain a small amount of familiar bedding from the main enclosure to provide scent continuity, a tiny piece of cucumber or other moisture source if the trip exceeds an hour, and a small hide where the animal can shelter during transit.

Long-distance moves require additional planning. Temperature is the dominant concern — a car interior in summer reaches lethal temperatures within minutes, and winter cold can cause torpor in under an hour. Schedule travel for moderate ambient conditions, plan continuous climate control, and never leave the carrier in an unattended vehicle. Air travel is rarely appropriate for hamsters; most airlines do not accept them in cabin, and cargo hold conditions are unsuitable.

For predictable veterinary needs, consider keeping a dedicated carrier set up year-round with bedding from the main enclosure. The reduced novelty of a familiar carrier lowers transit stress meaningfully. The carrier can be brought out occasionally during normal handling sessions so the animal does not associate it exclusively with stressful events.

Cleaning Supplies

Cleaning a Campbell enclosure correctly requires a different mindset than cleaning most other pet habitats. The animal relies on scent marking throughout the cage, and a fully sterilized environment after each cleaning resets that scent landscape and can trigger frantic re-marking behavior. The right approach is spot cleaning of soiled areas combined with much less frequent full substrate changes that retain some original bedding to preserve scent continuity.

Daily cleaning is light — remove obviously soiled corners of substrate, clear uneaten fresh foods, wipe the water bottle spout, and check for cached perishables in hidden corners. Weekly cleaning adds replacement of the toilet area if a designated corner has formed, a complete water bottle interior brushing, and a wipe-down of food dishes. Full substrate replacement happens every three to four weeks; when doing so, retain a handful of clean used bedding from a non-soiled area and incorporate it into the fresh substrate to preserve scent.

Cleaning products should be unscented and pet-safe. A solution of white vinegar and water, roughly one part vinegar to four parts water, handles most disinfection needs without leaving residues that bother the animal. Avoid bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, citrus oils, and any scented surface spray — all of these can irritate respiratory tissue and any residue ingested during subsequent self-grooming becomes a chronic exposure problem.

The cleaning toolkit needs a small dedicated brush set — one for the water bottle interior, one for cage corners, one for food dishes — kept separate from household cleaning tools. A small handheld vacuum reserved for the hamster area helps with substrate cleanup during full changes. A few microfiber cloths set aside for hamster duty, laundered separately without scented detergent, complete a workable kit.

Safety & Handling

Handling a Campbell safely requires more attention than handling a Syrian because the animal is smaller, faster, and somewhat more nip-prone when startled. The species can be tamed to confident hand interaction with patient short sessions repeated daily, but rushing the process — grabbing from above, lifting a sleeping animal, or constraining the back legs — creates negative associations that take weeks to undo. Allow the animal to climb voluntarily into a cupped hand at substrate level rather than reaching down to scoop.

Height is a hard safety issue. A Campbell that wriggles free or jumps from chest height onto a hard floor can sustain serious injury or death from the impact. Handle either at floor level, over a substantial surface like a bed or a substrate-filled play box, or over a low table with a deep pillow beneath. Never handle while standing on a hard floor without a catch surface.

Bite incidents, when they happen, are almost always defensive rather than aggressive — startled, sleep-disturbed, or sensing food on fingers that have not been washed. Washing hands before handling removes food scent that can trigger investigatory nibbles. Approaching slowly and from the side, allowing the animal to see the hand before contact, prevents most defensive nips. If bitten, hold still rather than jerking away; a sudden withdrawal can tear skin and may launch the animal into the air.

A secondary safety topic is escape prevention. Campbells can squeeze through gaps a quarter-inch wide, exploit any unsecured lid, and chew their way out of cardboard, thin plastic, and worn mesh. Conduct a periodic visual check of the entire enclosure perimeter — mesh integrity, lid latches, cable entry points, and any chewing damage at substrate level — and address any compromised point before it becomes an escape route. A hamster loose in a house typically does not return on its own and exposes itself to dangers ranging from electrical wiring to predatory pets to accidental crushing.

Seasonal Gear

The Dwarf Campbell tolerates moderate temperature variation but benefits from small seasonal adjustments to enclosure equipment. In summer, the priority is preventing heat buildup. Move the enclosure away from any sun-exposed window, increase ventilation by leaving more open mesh and removing covered tunnels, and add a small ceramic tile placed in shade — the tile stays cooler than surrounding substrate and gives the animal a cooling spot to rest against. A frozen water bottle wrapped in a thin towel and placed outside the cage near one corner can lower ambient temperature noticeably without exposing the animal directly to ice.

In winter, the priority shifts to draft elimination and moisture maintenance. Move the enclosure away from drafty windows and exterior walls. Increase nesting material substantially — a handful of unscented paper bedding or shredded napkin allows the animal to build a deeper insulating nest. If household humidity drops below 30 percent, a small room humidifier some distance from the cage helps with respiratory comfort. Direct heating pads under the enclosure are usually unnecessary and risk creating dangerous hot spots; ambient room temperature in the safe range is sufficient.

Shoulder seasons — spring and autumn — bring rapid weather swings that catch indoor environments unprepared. A small inexpensive room thermometer and hygrometer positioned at enclosure height removes guesswork and helps catch developing problems before they become acute. The same instruments allow verification that heating and cooling adjustments are actually achieving the intended effect rather than overcompensating.

Finally, lighting deserves seasonal attention. Campbells are crepuscular and benefit from predictable day-night cycles. In winter months with short natural daylight, supplementing with a low-wattage room light on a consistent timer maintains a regular circadian rhythm. The lighting should be ambient room lighting, not a cage-mounted bright source — direct illumination of the enclosure interior disrupts sleep and stresses the animal during its primary rest hours.
