The concept of enrichment for rats encompasses several distinct categories that should all be addressed within the housing setup. Physical enrichment includes objects and structures that encourage movement, climbing, and exploration. Cognitive enrichment challenges the animal to solve problems, manipulate objects, or navigate novel configurations to obtain rewards. Social enrichment, addressed primarily through same-species companionship, provides opportunities for play, grooming, and communal nesting that satisfy deeply ingrained social drives. Sensory enrichment introduces varied textures, scents, and materials that stimulate the rat's exceptionally keen senses of touch, smell, and hearing.
Boredom and under-stimulation manifest in Dumbo Rats through recognizable behavioral indicators that keepers should learn to identify. Excessive bar chewing, repetitive circuit running along cage walls, over-grooming that produces bald patches, increased aggression toward cage mates, lethargy and unwillingness to engage with the keeper, and self-directed barbering of whiskers or tail fur are all signs that the current enrichment offering is insufficient. Rotation is the organizing principle behind an effective enrichment strategy. Even the most engaging toy or puzzle loses its novelty after prolonged continuous exposure, and rats that have thoroughly explored and mastered an item will eventually ignore it.
