Dumbo Rats are active, intelligent, and inherently social animals that require considerably more living space than their small body size might initially suggest. The widely cited minimum cage volume for a pair of rats is two cubic feet per animal, but this figure represents an absolute floor rather than a target, and experienced keepers consistently report that larger enclosures produce calmer, healthier, and more behaviorally enriched animals. Because Dumbo Rats must always be kept in pairs or groups to meet their social needs, housing planning should begin with the assumption that at least two animals will share the space and should ideally accommodate the possibility of future additions to the colony.
Vertical space is just as important as floor area for rats, which are agile climbers that utilize all three dimensions of their environment. A tall cage with multiple levels connected by ramps, ladders, or platforms allows rats to express their natural climbing behavior and effectively multiplies the usable space within the cage footprint. Single-level enclosures with generous floor area but minimal height force rats into a two-dimensional living pattern that fails to engage a significant portion of their behavioral repertoire and can contribute to boredom-related problems such as bar chewing, excessive grooming, and lethargy.
Ventilation is a critical and frequently underappreciated housing consideration for rats. Their respiratory systems are exceptionally sensitive, and ammonia buildup from urine decomposition is the single largest environmental contributor to chronic respiratory disease, the leading cause of illness and death in pet rats. Wire cages with open bar construction provide vastly superior airflow compared to glass aquariums, plastic tubs, or enclosed habitats marketed for hamsters and mice. While aquariums and bin cages are sometimes used by breeders for temporary housing of young litters, they are inappropriate for long-term adult housing due to the trapped air column that concentrates ammonia at the level where the rats breathe.
Durability and chew resistance factor into cage selection as well. Rats possess powerful incisors that grow continuously throughout their lives, and they will gnaw on any material within reach, including cage components. Plastic bases, platforms, and accessories will eventually sustain chew damage that creates rough edges, exposes potentially toxic interior materials, and opens escape routes. Metal construction with powder-coated or galvanized finishes provides the longest service life, though even metal coatings will eventually wear through at high-contact points and should be inspected periodically for rust or sharp exposed edges.
