Capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) are obligate hindgut fermenters, meaning they rely on microbial fermentation in the cecum and large intestine to extract nutrients from fibrous plant material. This digestive strategy places them in the same functional category as horses and rabbits rather than ruminants like cattle, and it dictates nearly every aspect of their dietary requirements in captivity. A diet that fails to provide sufficient long-stem fiber will disrupt cecal fermentation, leading to dysbiosis, soft stool, bloating, and potentially life-threatening gastrointestinal stasis.
The foundation of a captive capybara diet must be grass and grass hay, which should constitute roughly seventy-five to eighty percent of total daily intake by volume. Capybaras in the wild graze almost continuously during dawn and dusk hours, consuming a wide variety of grasses and aquatic vegetation. Their continuously growing open-rooted molars are designed for this constant grinding action, and without adequate abrasive forage the teeth will overgrow and develop painful malocclusion, a condition that can become fatal if left untreated.
Protein needs are relatively modest for an animal of this size, typically falling between ten and fourteen percent of the diet on a dry-matter basis. Excessive protein intake, particularly from grain-heavy commercial feeds, places undue stress on the kidneys and liver and can contribute to the development of bladder stones, which are a documented health concern in captive capybaras. Fat requirements are similarly low, in the range of two to four percent, reflecting the naturally lean profile of wild grasses and aquatic plants.
Vitamin C deserves special attention because capybaras, like guinea pigs and humans, cannot synthesize ascorbic acid endogenously. They must obtain adequate vitamin C through dietary sources every single day, as the body has no meaningful storage capacity for this water-soluble nutrient. Deficiency leads to scurvy, which in capybaras manifests as lethargy, swollen joints, gum inflammation, and poor wound healing. An adult capybara requires approximately thirty to fifty milligrams of vitamin C per kilogram of body weight daily, a figure that must be met through fresh vegetables, fortified pellets, or direct supplementation.
