The minimum recommended floor space for a single adult Algerian Hedgehog is four square feet, equivalent to a footprint of roughly two feet by two feet. However, experienced keepers and exotic veterinarians consistently recommend at least six to eight square feet as a working minimum for animals that will spend the majority of their lives within the enclosure. In the wild, Algerian Hedgehogs spend their daylight hours concealed in dense vegetation, rock crevices, or underground burrows, and they require an enclosed, dark sleeping space in captivity to feel secure during rest. Commercially available small-animal igloos, fleece snuggle sacks, or simple structures made from overturned ceramic pots with entry holes provide effective sleeping hides. The interior should be large enough for the hedgehog to enter, turn around, and curl up comfortably, but not so large that the animal feels exposed.
