The Algerian Hedgehog, Atelerix algirus, is primarily an insectivore with opportunistic omnivorous tendencies. In its native range across North Africa and parts of coastal southern Europe, this species feeds heavily on beetles, caterpillars, earthworms, snails, and other ground-dwelling invertebrates, supplemented by occasional fruit, fungi, small vertebrates, and bird eggs. Replicating this dietary profile in captivity requires a carefully assembled combination of commercial foods and live or prepared insect offerings. A feeding plan that ignores the animal's strong insectivorous bias and substitutes plant-heavy alternatives will inevitably produce nutritional deficiencies, regardless of how varied the plant matter appears.
Protein is the cornerstone of the Algerian Hedgehog's diet and should constitute approximately thirty to thirty-five percent of total intake by dry weight. The majority of this protein must come from animal-based sources, as the amino acid profiles found in insect and animal tissues differ substantially from those in legumes, grains, or soy isolates. Methionine, taurine, and certain branched-chain amino acids that hedgehogs require in meaningful quantities are either absent or present at inadequate levels in most plant protein sources. Fat content should remain moderate, ideally between ten and fifteen percent, since captive hedgehogs are prone to obesity when caloric intake exceeds their actual metabolic expenditure.
Fiber plays a supporting role in hedgehog digestion, primarily through the chitin found in insect exoskeletons. Chitin functions as a form of insoluble fiber that promotes healthy gut motility and supports the balance of intestinal microflora. Commercial hedgehog diets that lack meaningful chitin content should be supplemented with whole insects to provide this essential dietary component. Soluble fiber from fruit and vegetable sources is tolerated in small amounts but is not a primary nutritional requirement for this species.
Micronutrient balance deserves careful attention, particularly the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, which should approximate two to one for adult hedgehogs and may need to be even higher for breeding females and growing juveniles. Most feeder insects are naturally phosphorus-heavy, creating a consistent need for calcium supplementation through dusting, gut-loading, or the provision of calcium-rich supplemental foods. Vitamin A, vitamin D3, and vitamin E are the fat-soluble vitamins of greatest concern, as deficiencies in any of these can produce serious health consequences including immune suppression, metabolic bone disease, and reproductive failure.
