Agoutis are herbivorous rodents native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, where their wild diet consists primarily of fallen fruits, nuts, seeds, and tender plant shoots found on the forest floor. Their digestive physiology is adapted to processing hard-shelled seeds and fibrous plant material, and their powerful jaw muscles and specialized incisors allow them to crack open nuts that most other animals cannot access, including the notoriously tough Brazil nut. In captivity, replicating the diversity and nutritional balance of this natural diet is one of the most important responsibilities an owner faces.
The macronutrient profile an agouti requires differs markedly from that of more commonly kept rodents like rats or guinea pigs. Agoutis need a diet that is moderate in protein, generally between twelve and sixteen percent, relatively low in fat at around five to eight percent, and rich in complex carbohydrates and fiber. Their wild foraging behavior involves consuming large quantities of fruit and vegetation with varying sugar and starch content throughout the day, so their metabolism is equipped to handle natural sugars in moderate amounts, though concentrated refined sugars remain harmful.
Fiber plays a critical role in maintaining healthy gastrointestinal function. Agoutis are hindgut fermenters that rely on a complex population of cecal microbes to break down cellulose and extract nutrients from plant cell walls. A diet deficient in fiber leads to disruption of this microbial community, which can result in soft stools, cecal dysbiosis, and a cascading series of digestive problems that are difficult to reverse once established.
Calcium and phosphorus balance is another area requiring careful attention. Agoutis that consume diets excessively high in calcium, often from over-supplementation or too much alfalfa, can develop urinary calculi and kidney damage over time. The ideal calcium-to-phosphorus ratio falls between 1.5:1 and 2:1, and this balance is best achieved through a varied diet of appropriate produce and a well-formulated base pellet rather than through mineral supplements added after the fact.
