In the wild, Mastomys natalensis lives in communal burrow systems with extensive tunnel networks, and captive housing must accommodate both their social nature and their drive to move, climb, and explore. A single animal housed alone will exhibit stress behaviors including excessive grooming, lethargy, and reduced lifespan, so housing should always be planned for groups of at least three to four individuals.
Minimum enclosure size for a small group of three to four African Soft-Furred Rats is approximately six hundred square inches of unbroken floor space, equivalent to a standard forty-gallon breeder aquarium or a cage measuring roughly thirty-six by eighteen inches. Larger groups require proportionally more space, and the general rule of adding at least seventy-five square inches of floor space per additional animal helps prevent overcrowding-related aggression and stress. Vertical space is valuable as well, as these rats are competent climbers who will readily use platforms, ramps, and elevated shelters when available.
Ventilation is a critical factor that shapes the enclosure choice. Ammonia buildup from urine is a leading cause of respiratory disease in captive rodents, and Mastomys natalensis is particularly susceptible to upper respiratory infections. Enclosures must provide continuous air exchange without creating drafts that chill the animals. This ventilation requirement is the primary tension in choosing between wire cages, which ventilate well but present escape risks, and glass aquariums, which contain bedding effectively but can trap stale air near the substrate.
Temperature and humidity control are important secondary considerations. African Soft-Furred Rats originate from sub-Saharan Africa and prefer ambient temperatures between seventy-two and eighty degrees Fahrenheit. They tolerate typical household humidity levels well but suffer in environments that are consistently damp, as excess moisture promotes both respiratory issues and the growth of mold in bedding material. Housing placement should avoid direct sunlight, heating vents, and exterior walls where temperature fluctuations are most pronounced.
