The African Soft-Furred Rat, Mastomys natalensis, is an omnivorous species whose wild diet spans seeds, grains, insects, and opportunistic vegetation. This broad dietary range means that captive specimens require a nutritionally diverse feeding plan rather than a single-source staple food. Their metabolic rate is high relative to their small body size, and they process food quickly through a relatively short gastrointestinal tract, making nutrient density and digestibility more important than sheer volume.
Protein requirements for African Soft-Furred Rats sit higher than those of many commonly kept rodents. While a standard fancy rat does well on fourteen to sixteen percent protein, Mastomys natalensis thrives on diets delivering sixteen to twenty percent crude protein, with animal-based protein sources contributing a meaningful portion. This reflects their natural tendency to consume insects and small invertebrates alongside plant matter. Insufficient protein intake manifests as poor coat condition, slow wound healing, and reproductive failure in breeding colonies.
Fat content in the diet should remain moderate, generally between four and seven percent. African Soft-Furred Rats are prone to obesity when fed high-fat diets in captivity because their activity levels rarely match the foraging demands of wild life. Excess body fat in this species is particularly dangerous because it accumulates around internal organs and can interfere with respiratory function given their compact body cavity.
Carbohydrates and fiber round out the macronutrient profile. Complex carbohydrates from whole grains provide sustained energy without the insulin spikes associated with simple sugars. Fiber content in the range of six to ten percent supports healthy gut transit and promotes the growth of beneficial intestinal flora. Unlike strict herbivores, African Soft-Furred Rats do not require extremely high fiber diets, but adequate roughage prevents the soft, malformed droppings that indicate digestive imbalance.
