These larvae do not require dusting before feeding, which makes them a convenient occasional addition to the diet. However, their relatively high fat content means they should not replace staple feeders entirely. Offering them once or twice a week as part of a varied rotation gives the frog a nutritional boost without contributing to obesity, which is a genuine concern in captive tree frogs that are often overfed relative to their activity level.
Waxworms and butterworms serve as high-fat treat feeders that can stimulate appetite in recovering or newly acquired frogs, but they must be used sparingly in healthy animals. Both contain lipid levels that far exceed the needs of a sedentary captive frog, and habitual feeding of waxworms can lead to food fixation, where the animal begins refusing leaner feeders. Silkworms are a far better occasional treat because they are high in protein and moisture while remaining relatively low in fat. Their soft bodies also make them easier for the frog to digest compared to heavily chitinous feeders.

Pet store feeder bins, while convenient, can sometimes harbor mite infestations or arrive nutritionally depleted if the insects have been held without food for extended periods.
