Red-eared sliders are omnivores whose dietary balance shifts dramatically with age, and understanding that shift is the foundation of feeding them well. Hatchlings and juveniles are heavily carnivorous, requiring protein-rich foods to fuel rapid shell and body growth. As sliders mature, they trend strongly toward herbivory, and adults should receive far more plant matter than animal protein. Keeping an adult on a high-protein juvenile diet is one of the most common and damaging mistakes a keeper can make, contributing to shell pyramiding, obesity, and long-term organ strain.
Calcium and vitamin D3 sit at the center of slider nutrition because these animals build and maintain a large bony shell throughout their lives. A diet low in calcium, or one that lacks the UVB exposure needed for the turtle to synthesize D3, leads to metabolic bone disease: a progressive softening and deformation of the shell and bones that is painful and frequently irreversible. The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of the overall diet matters as much as the raw calcium content, since excess phosphorus blocks calcium uptake.
Vitamin A is the other nutrient that causes trouble when it runs short. Deficiency is common in turtles fed a narrow diet of only commercial pellets or lean muscle meat, and it shows up as swollen, puffy eyes and increased susceptibility to respiratory infections. A varied rotation that includes leafy greens and the occasional vitamin-A-rich vegetable goes a long way toward preventing it. The practical takeaway is that no single food is complete on its own; variety is the safeguard.
