Families considering a Red-Eared Slider for a child must evaluate whether they are prepared for a multi-decade commitment to a large aquatic reptile.

Salmonella awareness is the single most important health consideration in households where children interact with Red-Eared Sliders or any other turtle species. All freshwater turtles can asymptomatically carry Salmonella bacteria that are transmissible through contact with the animal, its water, or any surface that has contacted the enclosure.
