The tomato frog (Dyscophus antongilii) is a strictly insectivorous amphibian whose nutritional needs in captivity must be met through a carefully managed rotation of live prey items. In the wild, these frogs are ambush predators that consume a broad range of terrestrial invertebrates found on the humid forest floor of northeastern Madagascar, from beetles and ants to small worms and insect larvae. Replicating this dietary diversity in a captive setting is one of the most consequential aspects of long-term husbandry, because a monotonous diet leads rapidly to nutritional deficiencies that manifest as metabolic bone disease, lethargy, and compromised immune function.
Because tomato frogs are sit-and-wait feeders that rely on movement to trigger a strike response, virtually all food items offered must be alive and actively moving at the time of presentation. Freeze-dried and pelleted amphibian diets exist on the market, but tomato frogs show little to no feeding response to stationary food. Keepers who attempt to rely on processed diets often find their frogs refusing meals for extended periods, ultimately resulting in weight loss and stress. The investment in live feeder cultures is therefore not optional but foundational.
Adult tomato frogs should be fed two to three times per week, while juveniles benefit from feedings every one to two days to support rapid growth. Portion size is typically gauged by the width of the frog's head; prey items wider than the space between the eyes risk choking or regurgitation. A single feeding session generally consists of three to six appropriately sized insects, depending on the size of the individual frog and whether the animal is in an active feeding phase or approaching a seasonal slowdown in appetite.
Seasonal variation in appetite is normal for tomato frogs, particularly during the cooler months when ambient temperatures may dip toward the lower end of their tolerance range. During these periods, it is common for adults to refuse food for a week or more. Keepers should resist the temptation to overfeed during active periods to compensate for anticipated slowdowns, as obesity is a significant health concern for this species in captivity and can shorten lifespan considerably.
