Tomato frogs absorb water and dissolved substances directly through their highly permeable ventral skin, making them acutely sensitive to chlorine, chloramine, heavy metals, and other contaminants present in municipal tap water. A single exposure to untreated tap water can cause chemical burns to the skin, respiratory distress, and in severe cases, death within hours.
Liquid water conditioners formulated for reptiles and amphibians are the most convenient and widely available treatment option. These products neutralize chlorine and chloramine on contact and typically include chelating agents that bind heavy metals such as copper and zinc. A dedicated bottle should be kept next to the enclosure at all times so that water changes are never delayed by the need to locate supplies. Dosing is straightforward: most products require a single drop per gallon of water, though keepers should follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific brand.
For keepers who prefer to avoid chemical conditioners altogether, aging tap water in an open container for twenty-four to forty-eight hours allows free chlorine to dissipate through off-gassing. This method does not remove chloramine, however, which is a stable compound increasingly used by water treatment facilities. A phone call to the local water utility or a review of the annual water quality report will clarify which disinfection method is used. If chloramine is present, a chemical conditioner or a carbon block water filter is necessary.
Reverse osmosis filtration systems provide the cleanest water available for amphibian use by removing virtually all dissolved solids, chemicals, and contaminants. Countertop and under-sink RO systems are available at a range of price points and are a worthwhile investment for serious keepers, particularly those managing multiple amphibian enclosures. However, RO water is essentially mineral-free, and long-term exclusive use without remineralization can lead to electrolyte imbalances in amphibians. Adding a small amount of amphibian-safe mineral supplement or blending RO water with a portion of conditioned tap water addresses this concern.
Water testing kits designed for aquarium use are a valuable accessory for monitoring the quality of both the source water and the water sitting in the frog's dish. Test strips or liquid reagent kits that measure pH, ammonia, nitrite, and chlorine provide a quick snapshot of water safety. Testing the tap water at least once per season and the dish water whenever the frog shows signs of skin irritation or behavioral changes helps identify water quality issues before they become emergencies.
