Starred Agamas are fundamentally climbing animals. In their native range across the rocky coastlines and stone ruins of the eastern Mediterranean, they spend the majority of their waking hours scaling vertical and near-vertical surfaces, patrolling territorial perimeters along stone walls, and perching on elevated vantage points. An enrichment strategy that fails to address this core behavioral drive will leave the lizard physically underexercised and behaviorally understimulated, regardless of what other provisions are offered. Climbing structures are not decorative accessories for this species — they are essential environmental features.
Commercially manufactured rock walls and modular climbing panels designed for reptile enclosures provide an excellent starting point. These products are typically made from molded resin or polyurethane foam coated with a textured surface that mimics natural stone. Panels are available in various sizes and can be siliconed directly to the back and side walls of the enclosure, transforming flat glass surfaces into climbable terrain. When selecting panels, choose those with deep texture and irregular contours rather than smooth or lightly stippled surfaces, as Starred Agamas rely on their sharp claws catching on surface irregularities for grip.
Natural stone and rock stacking offer the most authentic climbing experience but require careful engineering to ensure safety. Flat pieces of flagstone or slate can be layered with silicone adhesive between each joint to create a stable, terraced climbing wall that also provides crevice retreats. The structure must be load-tested before the animal is introduced — if any piece shifts when pressed firmly by hand, it needs additional adhesive or structural support. The weight of natural stone also demands that the enclosure floor and any shelving supporting the terrarium can handle the additional load.
Driftwood and branching structures add diagonal and horizontal climbing routes that complement vertical rock surfaces. A single large piece of manzanita or grapevine wood positioned diagonally from the enclosure floor to the upper third of the back wall creates a natural highway that the agama will use repeatedly throughout the day. Branches with forks and secondary limbs offer decision points during climbing, which introduces a mild cognitive element as the lizard navigates different routes to reach preferred perching spots. Rotating the position or angle of branches every few weeks changes the climbing landscape and maintains novelty.
Multi-level platform arrangements create a three-dimensional environment that maximizes the usable space within the enclosure. Platforms can be constructed from flat pieces of cork bark, stone ledges, or wooden shelves and mounted at different heights using brackets or silicone. Each platform should be wide enough for the agama to comfortably rest with its full body supported. Placing platforms at varying distances from the basking lamp creates thermal microzones that the lizard can choose between, effectively combining climbing enrichment with thermoregulatory opportunity.
