Adult Starred Agamas in the wild likely derive 40-60% of their annual nutrition from plant sources, with higher proportions during late summer and fall. Juveniles are more insectivorous than adults, gradually incorporating more plant matter as they mature.
Captive diet should replicate this omnivorous natural diet with appropriate balance. Juvenile Starred Agamas (under one year) should be offered food daily, with meals consisting primarily of appropriately-sized insects. Suitable feeders include crickets, dubia roaches, red runner roaches, black soldier fly larvae, hornworms, silkworms, and superworms for larger juveniles. Prey items should be no larger than the space between the agama's eyes. Even young agamas should be offered small amounts of finely chopped vegetables and flowers to encourage acceptance of plant matter early, though most juveniles show strong preference for insects during rapid growth phases.
Sub-adult and adult Starred Agamas (over one year) can be fed every other day or 3-4 times weekly depending on body condition and activity level. Adults should receive a balanced diet with approximately 60-70% insects and 30-40% plant matter in most meals, adjusting based on individual preferences and seasonal variations. Some keepers mimic natural seasonal patterns by offering more insects during spring and early summer, shifting toward more plant-heavy meals during late summer and fall, though this is optional rather than essential.
The insect portion should remain varied to ensure balanced nutrition. Crickets, various roach species, and other feeders should be gut-loaded for 24-48 hours before offering to maximize nutritional content. Black soldier fly larvae are particularly excellent feeders with superior calcium to phosphorus ratios. Variety prevents nutritional deficiencies and prevents selective feeding on less nutritious favorite insects. Many Starred Agamas enjoy hunting behavior, so releasing live insects stimulates natural behaviors, though tong-feeding can facilitate bonding and ensure all agamas in group settings receive adequate food.
The plant portion of the diet should include dark leafy greens such as collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, dandelion greens, and endive as the base. Vegetables including butternut squash, bell peppers, green beans, and grated carrots add variety. Flowers are particularly relished by Starred Agamas and should be offered regularly—hibiscus, nasturtium, dandelions, roses, and pansies are all suitable and enthusiastically consumed. Fruits should comprise 10-20% of plant offerings and can include figs, berries, melon, papaya, and mango. All plant material should be finely chopped to facilitate consumption and can be presented in shallow feeding dishes, with topical placement of a few insects often attracting initial attention to salads.
Supplementation is critical for preventing nutritional deficiencies. All feeder insects should be dusted with calcium powder before most feedings. For agamas receiving high-quality UVB lighting, use calcium without D3 for most feedings and calcium with D3 once weekly. Water should be available at all times in a shallow, stable dish that is refreshed daily. Starred Agamas will drink from standing water regularly and may occasionally soak, particularly before shedding. Some individuals learn to drink from spray bottles during infrequent misting sessions and may enjoy this interaction. Despite their arid origins, constant water access is important, particularly during warm weather or for gravid females. Hydration status can be monitored through skin turgor, eye brightness, and urate color—healthy urates should be white rather than yellow or orange.
