Providing appropriate water access is one of the most fundamental accessory decisions for Rhinoceros Iguana care, yet it is frequently underestimated by new keepers. These large lizards require a water dish substantial enough that they can submerge their entire head and drink comfortably without tipping the container. Lightweight plastic bowls sold for smaller reptiles are entirely inadequate for an adult Rhinoceros Iguana that can weigh fifteen to twenty pounds and will shove a flimsy dish across the enclosure in seconds. Heavy-duty ceramic crocks, cast concrete dishes, and molded resin water features designed for large reptiles provide the weight and stability necessary to resist displacement.
The water dish should be shallow enough for the iguana to enter and exit without difficulty but deep enough to allow voluntary soaking when the animal chooses. A depth of two to three inches accommodates the soaking behavior Rhinoceros Iguanas sometimes exhibit during shedding cycles or periods of mild dehydration. Dishes with a low, ramped entry edge rather than a vertical wall are preferable because they allow the iguana to walk into the water gradually, which reduces spillage and the startled response some animals display when stepping into deep water unexpectedly.
Separate soaking tubs are a valuable accessory for scheduled bathing sessions outside the enclosure. A large plastic storage container or a dedicated reptile soaking tub filled with lukewarm dechlorinated water to a depth that covers the iguana's lower body provides an excellent hydration and shedding aid. Soaking sessions of fifteen to twenty minutes, two to three times per week, help soften retained shed skin, flush the cloaca, and encourage voluntary drinking. The water temperature should be approximately 85 degrees Fahrenheit, tested with a digital thermometer before the iguana is placed in the tub.
Water quality inside the enclosure dish deteriorates rapidly. Rhinoceros Iguanas commonly defecate in their water, track substrate through it, and deposit food debris as they drink. Contaminated standing water is a breeding ground for Pseudomonas and other gram-negative bacteria that can cause dermatitis, stomatitis, and gastrointestinal infections. The water dish must be emptied, scrubbed, and refilled with fresh dechlorinated water daily without exception. Using a water conditioner formulated for reptiles neutralizes chlorine and chloramines present in municipal tap water that can irritate mucous membranes.
