Plated lizards belong to a relatively small group of mid-sized African lizards whose dietary flexibility is one of their most defining husbandry traits. Unlike strictly insectivorous species such as leopard geckos or purely herbivorous lizards like green iguanas, plated lizards occupy an omnivorous niche that requires keepers to balance animal protein, fruit sugars, and leafy plant matter across every weekly feeding cycle. Getting this balance right is not merely a matter of preference; it directly affects shell-like osteodermal plate health, reproductive fitness, and long-term organ function over a captive lifespan that can stretch well beyond two decades.
In the wild, Broadleysaurus major forages across savanna, rocky outcrops, and woodland edges, consuming beetles, millipedes, snails, fallen fruit, blossoms, and tender shoots. This broad palate means that no single commercial product can serve as a complete diet. Instead, keepers should think of food products as components of a rotating menu, much as one would approach nutrition for a bearded dragon, though with distinct ratio differences. A rough guideline for adult plated lizards allocates approximately fifty to sixty percent of the diet to invertebrate prey, twenty to thirty percent to fruits and soft vegetables, and the remainder to leafy greens and occasional flowers.
Juvenile plated lizards skew more heavily toward protein. Growing animals under twelve months of age benefit from daily insect offerings, whereas adults do well on feeding schedules of every other day or three to four times per week. Overfeeding protein to adults can contribute to obesity and hepatic lipidosis, a fatty liver condition that is notoriously difficult to reverse in reptiles. Conversely, underfeeding protein to juveniles stunts growth and delays the development of their characteristic armored plating.
Because plated lizards tend to be cautious feeders, especially when newly acquired, the texture, movement, and scent of offered food matter enormously. A roach that barely moves will often be ignored, while one that scurries across the substrate triggers an immediate predatory response. Similarly, overly wet fruit can be rejected in favor of firmer pieces that the lizard can grip and tear. Understanding these behavioral preferences helps keepers select the right products and presentation methods from the outset.
