The high fat content and difficult-to-digest bone matter in vertebrate prey can place undue strain on the kidneys of a captive animal that does not exercise at the same intensity as its wild counterparts. Most veterinarians specializing in reptile medicine advise against routine vertebrate feeding unless the animal is recovering from severe weight loss under direct veterinary supervision.
Sourcing feeder insects from reputable breeders is essential for Parson's chameleons because wild-caught insects carry parasites, pesticide residues, and unpredictable nutritional profiles. Several online insect farms now ship feeders in climate-controlled packaging, which is especially important during summer and winter months when temperature extremes can kill live feeders in transit.
