Ultraviolet B radiation is essential for Parson's chameleons to synthesize vitamin D3 in their skin, which in turn enables the absorption of dietary calcium from the gut. Without adequate UVB exposure, even the most meticulously supplemented diet cannot prevent the slow onset of metabolic bone disease, a condition that causes skeletal deformities, muscle tremors, and eventual organ failure. Selecting the correct UVB fixture and bulb for a Parson's chameleon enclosure requires an understanding of both the species' natural UVB exposure and the performance characteristics of commercially available products.
Linear fluorescent T5 HO (high output) fixtures are the current standard for chameleon UVB lighting. The Arcadia ProT5 fixture paired with a 6-percent or 12-percent UVB forest lamp, and the Zoo Med ReptiSun T5 HO in 5.0 or 10.0 strength, are the two most widely used products in serious chameleon husbandry. The choice between the lower and higher UVB percentages depends on the distance between the bulb and the primary basking perch, the presence or absence of a screen barrier between the bulb and the animal, and the species' natural UV exposure profile. Parson's chameleons inhabit shaded forest canopy, not open desert, so the lower-output forest bulbs are generally preferred unless the basking perch is positioned more than 15 inches from the bulb.
Bulb positioning relative to the basking perch is critical and is frequently miscalculated by novice keepers. The UVB bulb should run horizontally across the top of the enclosure, overlapping the basking zone so that the chameleon receives UVB exposure while it thermoregulates. The bulb should not cover the entire enclosure ceiling, as the chameleon must have the option to move into a UV-shaded area when it has received sufficient exposure. A two-thirds coverage arrangement, where the UVB bulb covers approximately two-thirds of the enclosure top and the remaining third provides shade, allows the animal to self-regulate its UV dose.
UVB bulbs degrade over time even though they continue to produce visible light. A fluorescent UVB bulb that appears to be functioning normally may be producing negligible UVB output after 6 to 12 months of use. Replacement schedules vary by manufacturer, but a conservative approach is to replace T5 HO bulbs every 9 to 12 months. Keepers who want to eliminate guesswork can invest in a Solarmeter 6.5R UV Index meter, which measures UVB irradiance in real time and provides objective data on bulb performance. The target UV Index at the basking perch for a forest-dwelling chameleon like the Parson's is between 1.0 and 3.0, replicating the filtered UV levels found beneath a tropical canopy.
Mercury vapor bulbs and metal halide bulbs are sometimes used as combination heat-and-UVB sources, but they are generally too intense for Parson's chameleons when used at the close distances required by typical enclosure heights. These bulbs produce UV indices that can exceed 7.0 at 12 inches, which is appropriate for basking desert species but risks photokeratoconjunctivitis and skin damage in a shade-adapted forest species. If a mercury vapor bulb is used, it must be positioned at least 18 to 24 inches from the nearest perch and should be controlled by a dimming thermostat to prevent overheating.
