Oustalet's Chameleon is among the largest chameleon species in the world, with adults routinely exceeding two feet in total length. That imposing size translates directly into elevated caloric and protein requirements that cannot be met by the small feeder insects typically marketed for smaller chameleon species. Adult Oustalet's Chameleons thrive on a rotation of large crickets, adult dubia roaches, superworms, hornworms, and silkworms, with occasional additions of grasshoppers and wild-caught insects from pesticide-free areas. Selecting appropriately sized prey items is critical: the general rule of offering insects no wider than the space between the chameleon's eyes still applies, but for a species this large that guideline permits surprisingly robust prey.
Crickets remain the backbone of most captive Oustalet's Chameleon diets due to their availability and reasonable cost in bulk quantities. However, relying solely on crickets introduces nutritional gaps, particularly in calcium and beneficial fatty acids. Dubia roaches offer a superior calcium-to-phosphorus ratio compared to crickets and carry lower chitin content relative to their body mass, making them an excellent staple or co-staple feeder. For keepers who breed their own dubia colonies, the cost efficiency over time is substantial, and colony maintenance is straightforward with proper heat and a consistent supply of vegetable scraps and dry grain.
Hornworms and silkworms serve as high-moisture, nutrient-dense supplemental feeders that most Oustalet's Chameleons accept with enthusiasm. Hornworms are particularly useful during periods of mild dehydration or after shipping stress, as their water content can exceed eighty percent. Silkworms provide a notably favorable amino acid profile and are low in fat, making them suitable for regular rotation without contributing to obesity. Both species are available from commercial insect breeders in various sizes appropriate for juvenile through adult chameleons.
Superworms occupy a useful niche as a high-energy feeder, but their elevated fat content demands moderation. Offering two to four superworms per feeding session for an adult, no more than twice weekly, prevents excessive fat deposition while still providing dietary variety. Black soldier fly larvae present another option with an exceptionally high natural calcium content, reducing the need for supplemental dusting when they compose a meaningful portion of the diet. The diversity of commercially available feeder species today means there is no reason to lock an Oustalet's Chameleon into a monotonous single-species diet.
Keepers should also consider the occasional use of flying insects such as waxmoths and houseflies, which stimulate natural hunting behaviors and provide excellent exercise for the tongue-strike mechanism. These feeders can be released into the enclosure in small numbers, encouraging the chameleon to track, aim, and project its tongue across longer distances. This behavioral enrichment through feeding is an often-overlooked component of nutritional planning that addresses both physical and psychological well-being.
