Without adequate UVB exposure, captive chameleons inevitably develop metabolic bone disease, a progressive and often fatal condition characterized by weakened bones, jaw deformities, tremors, and an inability to capture prey with the tongue. Providing high-quality UVB lighting is therefore not an optional accessory but a fundamental life-support system for this species.
Linear fluorescent T5 high-output UVB bulbs are the current gold standard for chameleon enclosures and represent a significant improvement over the older T8 technology that dominated the market for years. T5 HO bulbs produce higher UVB intensity at greater distances from the bulb surface, which is important for the tall enclosures required by large species like Oustalet's Chameleon. A six-percent UVB output bulb positioned on top of a screen-top enclosure typically delivers appropriate UVB levels to a basking perch eight to ten inches below the screen. For enclosures with solid tops where the bulb is mounted inside the enclosure, five-percent or six-percent output bulbs are generally sufficient, but a UVB meter should be used to verify actual radiation levels at the perching zone.
The fixture housing the UVB bulb should incorporate a quality reflector that directs the maximum amount of UVB radiation downward into the enclosure rather than scattering it in all directions. Fixtures without reflectors waste a substantial portion of the bulb's output on the ceiling and surrounding room surfaces where it serves no purpose. Commercially available T5 HO fixtures from reptile lighting manufacturers typically include purpose-built reflectors, but generic shop light fixtures often do not and may require aftermarket reflector installation.
UVB bulb replacement schedules are a critical maintenance consideration that is frequently overlooked. While the visible light output of a UVB bulb may remain apparently bright for well over a year, the invisible UVB component degrades steadily from the moment the bulb is first ignited. Most manufacturers recommend replacement every six to twelve months depending on the specific product, and keepers who invest in a UVB radiometer can verify actual output decline and time replacements precisely. Running an expired UVB bulb provides the illusion of proper lighting while the chameleon receives progressively less of the radiation it needs, creating a slow-onset deficiency that may not produce visible symptoms for months.
Mercury vapor bulbs and metal halide fixtures offer combined heat and UVB output in a single bulb and are used by some keepers for large enclosures where multiple individual fixtures would be impractical. These bulbs produce intense output and must be positioned at carefully measured distances to prevent UVB burns, which manifest as eye squinting, skin irritation, and behavioral avoidance of the illuminated area. They are best suited to very large enclosures or outdoor setups where the bulb can be mounted at sufficient height to distribute its output over a broad area without creating dangerous hot spots.
