Fire-Bellied Newts are semi-aquatic amphibians that spend the majority of their time in shallow water but require reliable access to land for resting, shedding, and occasional terrestrial exploration. The enclosure must accommodate both environments in a single setup, making a paludarium, a tank divided between aquatic and terrestrial zones, the standard housing approach. Unlike fully aquatic species such as axolotls or fully terrestrial species such as crested geckos, Fire-Bellied Newts cannot thrive in a habitat optimized for only one element.
A 20-gallon long aquarium is the recommended minimum for a pair or small group of two to four newts. The elongated footprint of a 20-gallon long provides more usable floor space than a standard 20-gallon tall, which is important because newts navigate their environment horizontally rather than vertically. Each additional newt beyond four should add roughly five gallons of capacity to prevent crowding and the water quality problems that accompany it.
The enclosure must have a secure, tight-fitting lid. Fire-Bellied Newts are surprisingly capable climbers, especially along silicone seams and along equipment cords, and they will escape from any opening large enough to squeeze through. A screen lid allows ventilation while preventing escapes, though glass or acrylic lids with ventilation strips work equally well and help retain the humidity that benefits the land portion of the enclosure. Gaps around filter intakes, cord pass-throughs, and lid corners should be sealed with aquarium-safe foam or mesh.
Placement of the enclosure within your home matters more than many keepers realize. Fire-Bellied Newts are cool-water animals that suffer in temperatures above 75 degrees Fahrenheit, so the tank should be positioned away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and appliances that generate ambient warmth. A cool, stable room with consistent temperatures between 60 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit year-round is ideal. Basements and north-facing rooms often provide these conditions naturally without the need for active cooling.
