A thermostat is the single most critical piece of technology in any cave gecko enclosure. No heat source, whether heat mat, ceramic heat emitter, or radiant heat panel, should ever operate without thermostat regulation. Uncontrolled heating elements can reach surface temperatures that far exceed the narrow safe range for Goniurosaurus species, causing thermal burns, heat stress, and in extreme cases, death. The thermostat transforms a potentially dangerous device into a precisely controlled tool by cycling the heat source on and off to maintain a target temperature.
On-off thermostats, sometimes called non-proportional thermostats, are the simplest and least expensive type. They function by turning the heat source fully on when the probe reads below the set temperature and fully off when it reads above. This cycling produces minor temperature oscillations around the set point, typically within a degree or two. For under-tank heat mats, which are the most common heat source in cave gecko setups, an on-off thermostat provides adequate control at a fraction of the cost of more advanced models.
Proportional thermostats, also known as pulse-proportional or dimming thermostats, deliver smoother temperature regulation by modulating the power output of the heat source rather than switching it fully on and off. The result is a more stable temperature with smaller fluctuations, which more closely approximates the thermal consistency of a natural cave environment. These units cost more than on-off models but are strongly recommended for ceramic heat emitters and radiant heat panels, which respond more gradually to power changes and benefit from proportional control.
Probe placement determines whether the thermostat is reading the temperature the gecko actually experiences or a meaningless number from an irrelevant location. For under-tank heat mats, the probe should be positioned between the mat and the enclosure floor, secured with heat-resistant tape, to measure the surface temperature the gecko contacts through the substrate. For overhead heat sources, the probe belongs at the gecko's resting height in the basking zone. A probe placed at the wrong elevation or against the enclosure wall provides misleading readings and defeats the purpose of the thermostat entirely.
