Cave geckos (Goniurosaurus spp.) are strict insectivores native to the humid limestone karst forests and cave entrances of southern China, Vietnam, and Japan. Their relatively sedentary lifestyle and moderate body size place their caloric requirements well below those of active lizards like monitors, but the quality and mineral balance of what they consume is no less critical. A poorly fed cave gecko may survive for years before the damage becomes visible, making nutritional neglect one of the most insidious threats in captive husbandry.

Calcium metabolism is the cornerstone of cave gecko nutrition. Like most insectivorous geckos, Goniurosaurus species are highly susceptible to metabolic bone disease when the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio in the diet falls below the ideal range of roughly 2:1. Feeder insects are almost universally phosphorus-heavy in their natural state, and without consistent correction through dusting and gut-loading, skeletal demineralization proceeds quietly until the gecko presents with soft jaws, limb tremors, or spinal deformities.

Fat intake requires careful management in a species that does not engage in sustained activity. Cave geckos in the wild expend energy in short bursts of ambush predation and spend long periods motionless in rock crevices or cave recesses. Captive specimens that receive calorie-dense prey on a frequent schedule rapidly accumulate visceral fat, which stresses the liver and reproductive organs. Leaner staple feeders offered at appropriate intervals keep body condition in the optimal range.

Hydration is often underappreciated in the context of nutrition. Cave geckos originate from environments with high ambient humidity, and they obtain a meaningful portion of their water intake from prey moisture and from licking condensation off enclosure surfaces. Dehydrated feeder insects deliver fewer nutrients and contribute to chronic low-grade dehydration in the gecko, a condition that subtly impairs digestion and nutrient absorption long before clinical signs emerge.

What to Look For

Prey size is the first and most important selection criterion. Cave geckos have relatively small heads and delicate jaw structures compared to similarly sized gecko species. The standard guideline of choosing insects no wider than the space between the gecko's eyes applies rigorously here; oversized prey items risk jaw injury, regurgitation, and intestinal obstruction. Err on the side of slightly smaller rather than slightly larger, especially with juveniles and recently acquired animals that may still be acclimating.

Movement and vitality of the feeder insects matter more than many keepers realize. Cave geckos are ambush predators whose feeding response is triggered primarily by motion. Sluggish, half-dead insects often go ignored entirely, leading the keeper to conclude the gecko is off-feed when the real issue is unappealing prey presentation. Purchasing from suppliers who maintain clean, well-fed colonies ensures the insects arrive active and trigger a strong predatory response.

Gut-load compatibility separates effective feeders from empty-calorie fillers. The ideal staple insect is one that readily consumes a nutrient-dense diet in the day or two before being offered to the gecko, effectively converting itself into a mineral and vitamin delivery vehicle. Species that refuse gut-load material or process it too slowly to absorb meaningful nutrition before feeding day provide significantly less value regardless of their baseline nutritional profile.

Shelf life and ease of maintenance at home deserve honest consideration. Feeders that require elaborate housing setups, precise temperature control, or daily attention often end up neglected and nutritionally depleted by the time they reach the gecko. Choose insects you can realistically keep in good condition with your available time and space, and purchase quantities you will use within a reasonable window.

Staple Feeder Insects

Crickets remain the most widely available and well-proven staple feeder for cave geckos. Their erratic movement is an excellent trigger for the ambush-feeding instinct of Goniurosaurus species, and they gut-load readily on a diet of dark leafy greens, squash, and commercial cricket feed. The downsides are familiar to any reptile keeper: crickets are noisy, short-lived, and prone to escaping. Buying small quantities every few days and gut-loading immediately upon arrival keeps them in peak nutritional condition and minimizes the nuisance factor.

Dubia roaches offer a quieter, longer-lived alternative that has become increasingly popular among gecko keepers. Their protein-to-fat ratio is favorable, their chitin is easily digested by small geckos, and they gut-load exceptionally well. For cave geckos, the smallest nymph sizes are appropriate, as even medium Dubias may exceed the recommended prey width for this species. Nymphs can be kept in a simple ventilated container with egg crate and fed the same gut-load diet used for crickets.

Black soldier fly larvae provide a useful calcium-rich option that reduces the need for supplemental dusting at those particular feedings. They are slow-moving, which suits the deliberate hunting style of many Goniurosaurus individuals, and they store easily in a cool location for extended periods. Their higher fat content relative to crickets and Dubias means they work best as a regular rotation element rather than the sole dietary foundation.

Lateral-horned flour beetles and their larvae, commonly sold as mini mealworms, can serve as an additional staple rotation option for smaller cave gecko species. They are easy to culture at home, accept gut-load material, and their small size makes them appropriate for even the most petite Goniurosaurus. As with all staples, consistency in gut-loading and dusting matters more than the specific species chosen.

Variety and Occasional Feeders

Dietary variety prevents nutritional blind spots and provides behavioral enrichment for an intelligent, if reclusive, predator. Cave geckos that eat only one prey type for months can develop fixation, refusing healthier alternatives when circumstances demand a change. Introducing rotational feeders early and consistently avoids this trap and keeps the animal responsive to a range of prey.

Waxworms are the most commonly available treat feeder and are rarely refused by any Goniurosaurus species. Their soft bodies and high fat content make them easy to digest and calorie-dense, which is precisely why they should be offered sparingly. One or two waxworms per feeding session, no more than once a week, provides enrichment without tipping the caloric balance. Keepers who use waxworms as a bribe to restart feeding in a finicky gecko should transition back to staples as quickly as possible.

Small silkworms and hornworms offer high-moisture, nutrient-dense variety without the excessive fat load of waxworms. Hornworms in particular grow rapidly, so purchasing them at the smallest available size and using them within a few days ensures they remain appropriately sized for cave geckos. Both species are well accepted and can be offered once or twice per week as part of a balanced rotation alongside the primary staple.

Springtails and fruit flies serve as valuable supplemental feeders for juvenile cave geckos and for adult specimens of the smaller Goniurosaurus species. These micro-feeders are easy to culture at home, provide continuous prey availability, and can be offered in bioactive enclosure setups where they serve the dual purpose of custodian invertebrate and supplemental food source. They do not replace the nutritional density of larger staple insects but add welcome dietary breadth.

Supplements

Calcium supplementation is the single most important nutritional intervention for captive cave geckos. A plain calcium carbonate powder without added phosphorus should be applied as a light dusting to feeder insects at nearly every feeding. The goal is a thin, even coating rather than a heavy crust; excessive powder causes prey refusal in many gecko species and does not improve absorption. A small dish of plain calcium powder left in the enclosure allows the gecko to self-supplement, a behavior observed in many Goniurosaurus individuals and one that appears to help the animal regulate its own intake.

Vitamin D3 supplementation requires a more measured approach. Cave geckos are crepuscular to nocturnal animals that receive limited ultraviolet exposure even in the wild, and many captive setups forgo UVB lighting entirely. In the absence of UVB, dietary D3 is the only source available for calcium metabolism, making a calcium-with-D3 powder essential at a portion of feedings, typically every second or third dusting session. Keepers who provide low-level UVB in the enclosure can reduce D3 supplementation frequency accordingly, though they should not eliminate it.

A broad-spectrum reptile multivitamin rounds out the supplementation schedule. Offered once per week via light dusting, a quality multivitamin provides trace minerals and vitamins that neither gut-loading nor calcium powders fully cover. Vitamin A is of particular importance for gecko eye and skin health, and formulations that include preformed vitamin A (retinol) in modest amounts are generally preferred over those relying solely on beta-carotene, which reptiles convert inefficiently.

Gut-loading is not a substitute for dusting, nor is dusting a substitute for gut-loading. The two practices work in concert: gut-loading embeds nutrients deep within the prey's tissues where they are absorbed efficiently during digestion, while surface dusting provides an immediate mineral boost at the moment of ingestion. Skipping either half of this equation compromises the overall nutritional profile regardless of how diligently the other is performed.

Foods to Avoid

Wild-caught insects pose an unacceptable risk to cave geckos and should never be offered under any circumstances. Pesticide and herbicide residues are widespread in urban, suburban, and even rural environments, and even trace quantities of these chemicals can cause acute toxicity or chronic organ damage in a small-bodied gecko. Parasites carried by wild insects add a second layer of risk, potentially introducing pathogens that are difficult and expensive to treat in a species that does not tolerate handling or medication stress well.

Fireflies and any bioluminescent insects are immediately lethal to reptiles. The lucibufagins present in firefly tissues are cardiotoxic, and ingestion of even a single firefly can kill a cave gecko within hours. This warning extends to any insect that cannot be positively identified as a safe, captive-bred species. When in doubt, do not offer it.

Cave geckos are obligate insectivores with no capacity to digest plant matter, fruit, or commercial omnivore diets. Offering these items wastes feeding opportunities and can cause gastrointestinal upset or blockages. The only role fruits and vegetables play in cave gecko nutrition is as gut-load material inside feeder insects, not as direct food for the gecko itself. Similarly, baby food, honey, or fruit-based gecko diet mixes formulated for frugivorous species like crested geckos are nutritionally inappropriate and should never be offered.

Overreliance on high-fat feeders such as waxworms, butterworms, or mealworm beetles leads to obesity, hepatic lipidosis, and feeding fixation. These items have a legitimate place as occasional treats and appetite stimulants, but the moment they begin to constitute a regular portion of the diet, the gecko's long-term health is compromised. Maintaining discipline around treat feeders is especially important with cave geckos, which are sedentary animals that burn calories slowly and store fat readily.

Feeding Schedule

Juvenile cave geckos grow steadily rather than explosively, but they still require frequent feeding to support skeletal development and healthy weight gain. Offer appropriately sized insects every evening, providing as many as the gecko will consume within a fifteen- to twenty-minute active feeding window. Removing uneaten prey afterward prevents stress from insects crawling over the gecko during its rest period and reduces the risk of cricket-inflicted skin abrasion on a sleeping animal.

Subadult cave geckos between six and twelve months of age transition well to feedings every other day. Portion sizes should increase modestly as the animal grows, guided by body condition rather than a fixed insect count. A healthy subadult maintains a slightly rounded tail base without visible fat deposits along the sides of the body. If the tail becomes noticeably thin or the hip bones begin to show, increase frequency or portion size promptly.

Adult Goniurosaurus thrive on three to four feedings per week, with each session consisting of four to eight appropriately sized insects depending on the species and individual metabolism. Some keepers prefer a consistent every-other-day schedule, while others feed three nights per week with slightly larger portions. Either approach works well as long as body condition remains stable and the animal maintains a healthy appetite.

Feeding should always occur in the evening or after lights-out, aligning with the gecko's natural crepuscular and nocturnal activity cycle. A gecko that is offered food during the day will typically ignore it, and the presence of loose feeder insects in a brightly lit enclosure during rest hours creates unnecessary stress. Using red or dim blue lighting during feeding sessions allows observation without disrupting the animal's behavioral rhythm. Seasonal appetite fluctuations are normal, particularly during cooler months or breeding cycles, and a brief reduction in feeding enthusiasm does not automatically indicate illness.
