Body condition monitoring is more reliable than rigid portion rules, since individual metabolism varies with age, ambient temperature, and activity level.

What to Look For

Fresh, organic produce eliminates the risk of pesticide residues, though thoroughly washed conventional produce is acceptable for most keepers.

Their soft bodies relative to other roach species make them digestible across all age groups, and their inability to climb smooth surfaces or fly eliminates escape concerns. For a single Berber Skink, a biweekly purchase of appropriately sized nymphs is generally sufficient.

Crickets remain a widely available and cost-effective staple. Their active movement stimulates the Berber Skink's prey drive and provides a degree of behavioral enrichment during feeding. The downsides are well documented: noise, short lifespan, and a tendency to foul their containers rapidly. Buying in quantities that will be used within three to four days and gut-loading immediately upon arrival minimizes waste and maximizes nutritional output.

The plant component of the staple diet should center on calcium-rich dark greens such as collard greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens, and turnip greens. These can be offered finely chopped in a shallow dish several times per week. Many Berber Skinks are initially hesitant about greens, especially individuals that were raised on insect-only diets, but consistent exposure usually builds acceptance over time. Variety and Occasional Foods

Dietary variety prevents nutritional blind spots and keeps the Berber Skink engaged during feeding. A rotation of supplemental feeders layered onto the staple diet ensures the animal receives a broader micronutrient profile than any single prey species can provide. Introducing variety early in the animal's life also prevents the food fixation that sometimes develops when a skink is raised on a monotonous diet.

Mealworms and superworms are convenient rotational insects with long shelf lives. Their harder chitin content provides textural diversity and trace minerals, though it also means they should not dominate the diet. Offering a handful of mealworms two or three times per week alongside softer staples is a practical approach. Superworms are calorie-dense and better suited for adult skinks in good body condition rather than juveniles or overweight individuals.

Hornworms and silkworms are high-moisture, soft-bodied feeders that Berber Skinks typically accept with enthusiasm. Hornworms grow quickly and should be purchased small and used promptly before they exceed appropriate prey size. Silkworms are nutritionally outstanding but more fragile to keep alive, so they work best as a periodic treat purchased in small quantities. Fruit can be offered in small amounts as an occasional dietary accent. Berries, melon, mango, and papaya are well tolerated and provide natural sugars, moisture, and certain vitamins. Foods to Avoid

Wild-caught insects should never be fed to Berber Skinks regardless of the collection environment. Pesticide and herbicide residues are invisible, odorless, and often lethal to reptiles at concentrations that would not affect larger animals. Even in rural or seemingly pristine areas, parasitic nematodes and protozoans carried by wild invertebrates pose a serious risk of gastrointestinal infection. The modest savings of free-caught insects is never worth the veterinary costs and health consequences of contaminated prey.

Fireflies and other bioluminescent insects are acutely toxic to reptiles. The lucibufagins they produce as a chemical defense are cardiotoxic and can kill a skink after ingestion of even a single specimen. Any insect that glows, is brightly colored as a warning signal, or cannot be positively identified as a safe captive-bred species must be excluded from the diet without exception.

High-oxalate greens such as spinach and beet greens should be used sparingly or avoided altogether. Oxalic acid binds dietary calcium in the gut and renders it unavailable for absorption, effectively negating supplementation efforts at that meal. Processed human foods, dog food, cat food, and commercial diets formulated for omnivorous reptile species other than skinks are nutritionally inappropriate. These products contain preservatives, sodium levels, and macronutrient ratios that do not align with the Berber Skink's physiological requirements. Similarly, waxworms should be treated as rare treats rather than dietary components. Their extreme fat content promotes obesity and fatty liver disease, and skinks that develop a preference for them often refuse more nutritious prey. Timing feedings to align with the skink's natural activity cycle improves digestion and food acceptance. Berber Skinks are most active during the warmest hours of their photoperiod, after they have had an opportunity to bask and reach optimal core temperature. Offering food during this window ensures efficient enzymatic digestion. Feeding late in the day, when enclosure temperatures are declining, increases the risk of food sitting partially digested overnight and contributes to gastrointestinal issues over time. Track body condition, appetite trends, and stool quality consistently, and adjust portions or frequency based on what the animal's body is telling you rather than adhering rigidly to a generic schedule.
