Heavy ceramic dishes designed for reptiles meet all of these criteria and are far superior to lightweight plastic alternatives that overturn easily and scratch over time, harboring bacteria in the grooves.

The water dish should be positioned on the cooler side of the enclosure to minimize evaporation and reduce the rate at which warm water promotes bacterial growth. Some keepers place a flat stone or tile beneath the dish to create a stable, level platform that also prevents the skink from burrowing directly under the dish and displacing it. Regardless of positioning, the water must be changed daily. Even in the absence of visible contamination, a warm terrarium environment transforms standing water into a microbial culture within hours.

Pre-mixing the soil and sand blend in bulk and storing it in a sealed container also gives any residual moisture time to equalize, which produces a more consistent product than mixing fresh batches under time pressure on cleaning day.

Shedding Aids and Skin Care

Berber Skinks shed their skin in patches rather than in a single piece, and under proper humidity conditions, most sheds complete without intervention. However, incomplete or retained sheds do occur, particularly around the toes, tail tip, and eye caps, and having the right accessories on hand allows the keeper to address these situations promptly before they escalate into circulation-restricting bands or infection sites.

A dedicated shedding hide, sometimes called a humid hide or moist hide, is the single most effective preventive accessory for clean sheds. This is a partially enclosed shelter lined with damp sphagnum moss or unbleached paper towel, placed on the cooler side of the enclosure. The skink enters voluntarily when it needs localized humidity to loosen the old epidermis. The hide should be checked every two to three days, re-moistened as needed, and the moss replaced entirely every week or two to prevent mold and bacterial colonization in the damp environment.

Retained shed around the toes constricts circulation as the tissue beneath swells, and if not addressed promptly, it can result in the loss of individual toes. Berber Skinks rarely bite aggressively, but a defensive nip from a startled animal can be painful enough to cause the handler to flinch or drop the skink, which risks injury from a fall. Travel and Transport Carriers

Every Berber Skink keeper needs a secure transport carrier, even if the animal rarely leaves the home. Veterinary visits, emergency evacuations, temporary housing during enclosure cleaning or upgrades, and relocation all require a safe, ventilated container that minimizes stress during transit. A well-chosen carrier is a one-time purchase that serves the animal for its entire life.

Small plastic pet carriers or ventilated reptile transport boxes with secure latching lids are the most practical option. The carrier should be large enough for the skink to turn around comfortably but not so spacious that the animal is thrown around during vehicle movement. A carrier roughly 12 by 8 by 6 inches accommodates an adult Berber Skink well. Ventilation holes or mesh panels must be small enough to prevent the skink from pushing its snout through and abrading its rostral scales, a common injury in poorly designed transport containers.

In hot weather, keeping the carrier in an air-conditioned vehicle and out of direct sunlight prevents lethal overheating, which can occur in minutes inside a sealed plastic container exposed to solar radiation. A small digital thermometer placed inside the carrier gives real-time confirmation that transit temperatures remain within the safe range.

For veterinary visits specifically, transporting the skink in its carrier along with a fresh fecal sample in a sealed bag and a brief written summary of husbandry parameters such as temperatures, diet, and recent behavioral observations streamlines the consultation and ensures the veterinarian has the information needed for an efficient examination.
