Axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) are permanently aquatic salamanders that spend their entire lives submerged. Unlike many amphibians that transition between aquatic and terrestrial phases, axolotls never metamorphose under normal conditions, which means their enclosure is a fully aquatic setup with no land area required. This simplifies housing in some respects but introduces a different set of demands centered on water volume, temperature stability, and filtration capacity.

The minimum recommended tank size for a single adult axolotl is 20 gallons, measured as a long-style aquarium rather than a tall one. Axolotls are bottom-dwellers that use floor space far more than vertical water column, so a tank with a larger footprint is always preferable to a deeper, narrower design of equal volume. A 20-gallon long provides roughly 30 inches of length and 12 inches of width, enough for one adult to move, rest, and feed comfortably. For each additional axolotl, add a minimum of 10 gallons to prevent territorial stress and maintain water quality.

Temperature is the single most critical environmental parameter and the one most frequently mismanaged by new keepers. Axolotls evolved in the cool, high-altitude lakes of central Mexico and require water temperatures between 60 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit for long-term health. Sustained temperatures above 72 degrees cause chronic stress, suppressed immune function, appetite loss, and increased susceptibility to fungal and bacterial infections. In warm climates or during summer months, active cooling measures are not optional but essential components of the housing plan.

Water depth should be sufficient to fully submerge the animal with several inches of clearance above its back, typically 12 to 16 inches. Axolotls periodically swim to the surface to gulp air, a normal behavior that supplements their gill respiration, so the surface must be accessible. Tanks that are excessively deep serve no benefit and make maintenance more difficult without providing any advantage to the animal.

Tank Selection

Standard glass aquariums remain the most popular and practical choice for axolotl housing. They are widely available, affordable in the common sizes, easy to clean, and provide clear visibility for monitoring the animal's health and behavior. A 20-gallon long glass tank from any major aquarium manufacturer is a reliable starting point for a single axolotl, and the standardized dimensions make finding compatible lids, lights, and filter hardware straightforward.

Acrylic tanks offer an alternative with certain advantages and trade-offs. Acrylic is lighter than glass, provides slightly better insulation, and is less prone to catastrophic cracking. However, acrylic scratches more easily during cleaning, and over time the interior surfaces can develop a haze that reduces clarity. For keepers who prioritize weight savings or need a custom-shaped enclosure, acrylic is a reasonable option, but for most standard setups glass is the more durable long-term investment.

Breeder-style tanks deserve special mention because their proportions align perfectly with axolotl needs. A 40-gallon breeder, for example, offers a generous 36-by-18-inch footprint at a manageable 16-inch height, providing ample floor space for two axolotls with room to spare. The wider front-to-back dimension compared to standard long tanks gives the animals more meaningful territory and makes aquascaping with hides and plants considerably easier.

Plastic storage tubs are sometimes used as temporary or budget housing, particularly for juveniles, quarantine situations, or breeders managing multiple animals. While functional in the short term, tubs lack the visibility needed for routine health monitoring, scratch easily, and may leach chemicals if not rated as food-safe. They should be considered transitional housing rather than a permanent home. Any tub used must be opaque enough to reduce stress from external light and movement but still allow the keeper to observe the animal without constant disturbance.

Substrate Options

Substrate choice in an axolotl enclosure is not merely aesthetic; it directly impacts the animal's digestive safety and overall health. Axolotls feed by rapidly opening their mouths to create a suction vortex that pulls in prey along with any loose material in the immediate vicinity. This feeding mechanism means that any small, hard substrate particles within reach of the mouth will inevitably be ingested over time, creating a serious impaction risk.

Bare-bottom tanks are the safest substrate option and are strongly recommended for juvenile axolotls under five inches. A bare glass or acrylic floor eliminates impaction risk entirely, simplifies cleaning, and makes it easy to spot uneaten food and waste. The primary drawback is that axolotls have difficulty gripping a completely smooth surface, which can cause stress as they slide when trying to walk. Adding a thin layer of aquarium-safe silicone matting or a slate tile to the bottom provides traction without introducing ingestion hazards.

Fine sand, specifically aquarium-grade sand with a grain size under one millimeter, is widely used by experienced keepers and is generally considered safe for adult axolotls. Sand grains that are ingested pass through the digestive tract without causing blockages in healthy animals. Play sand and pool filter sand are popular budget-friendly options, though both should be thoroughly rinsed before use to remove dust and fine particulates that cloud the water. Black sand is a common aesthetic choice that also provides visual contrast, making it easier to spot waste and uneaten food.

Gravel of any size is unacceptable and represents the single most dangerous substrate choice for axolotls. Pebbles, river rocks, decorative glass beads, and any loose material larger than fine sand will be ingested and can cause fatal intestinal blockages. This warning applies regardless of the axolotl's age or size. Even large river stones marketed as too big to swallow can shift and trap smaller debris beneath them, creating secondary ingestion risks. The simplest rule is that if a particle is larger than a grain of sand and smaller than the axolotl's entire body, it does not belong in the tank.

Filtration

Filtration is essential in any axolotl enclosure but must be implemented with an understanding of the species' sensitivity to water flow. Axolotls are slow-moving animals adapted to still or very gently moving water. Strong currents from powerful filters stress the animal, cause gill damage over time, and can push lightweight axolotls around the tank, leading to chronic anxiety and reduced feeding. The ideal filter produces effective biological and mechanical filtration with minimal water disturbance at the tank level.

Sponge filters powered by an air pump are the most widely recommended filtration option for axolotl tanks. They produce gentle water movement, provide excellent biological filtration through their large porous surface area, and pose no risk of injuring the animal's delicate gills. Sponge filters are also inexpensive, easy to maintain, and nearly silent. For a 20-gallon tank, a single large sponge filter rated for the tank's volume is sufficient. Larger tanks benefit from two sponge filters placed at opposite ends to distribute filtration evenly.

Hang-on-back filters are commonly used in the aquarium hobby and can work for axolotl tanks if the outflow is properly baffled. An unbaffled hang-on-back filter creates a waterfall effect that generates far too much surface agitation and current for an axolotl. Attaching a sponge or filter floss to the outflow nozzle, or positioning the return against the tank wall to diffuse the stream, reduces flow to acceptable levels. The mechanical filtration cartridges in these units are convenient for removing particulate matter, but the biological filtration capacity is typically inferior to a dedicated sponge filter.

Canister filters offer the highest filtration capacity and are appropriate for larger tanks or multi-animal setups where waste production exceeds what a sponge filter can process. Their output must be controlled with a spray bar or flow diffuser aimed along the back glass rather than directly into the tank. Canister filters are more expensive and require more involved maintenance, but their ability to house large volumes of biological media makes them the best choice for tanks over 40 gallons or for keepers who want extended intervals between water changes.

Water Parameters

Axolotls are remarkably tolerant of a range of water chemistry conditions compared to many tropical fish, but they are acutely sensitive to temperature and dissolved waste products. Maintaining stable water parameters is the foundation of axolotl husbandry, and the majority of health problems seen in captive axolotls trace back to one or more parameters drifting outside acceptable ranges for extended periods.

Temperature must be maintained between 60 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit, with 64 degrees representing an ideal midpoint. Unlike tropical aquatic species, axolotls do not require a heater, and in most indoor environments the challenge is keeping water cool enough rather than warm enough. In climate-controlled homes that stay below 72 degrees year-round, ambient room temperature may be sufficient. In warmer environments, aquarium chillers, clip-on fans directed across the water surface, or frozen water bottles rotated through the tank are common cooling strategies, each with different levels of effectiveness and consistency.

The nitrogen cycle must be fully established before introducing an axolotl to a new tank. Ammonia and nitrite are both toxic at any detectable level and cause gill damage, skin lesions, and organ failure with prolonged exposure. A properly cycled tank converts ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate through colonies of beneficial bacteria established in the filter media and on tank surfaces. This cycling process typically takes four to six weeks in a new setup and should be verified with a liquid test kit before the animal is added.

Nitrate, the end product of the nitrogen cycle, is far less toxic than ammonia or nitrite but should still be kept below 20 parts per million through regular partial water changes. A weekly change of 20 to 30 percent of the tank volume, using dechlorinated water matched to the tank's temperature, is the standard maintenance schedule. The pH should fall between 6.5 and 8.0, with a slightly alkaline range of 7.0 to 7.5 being ideal. Sudden pH swings are more dangerous than a stable reading at either end of the range, so consistency matters more than hitting a precise number.

Chlorine and chloramine in municipal tap water are lethal to axolotls and must be neutralized before any water is added to the tank. A quality water conditioner that treats both chlorine and chloramine is a non-negotiable supply item. Some conditioners also bind heavy metals and detoxify small amounts of ammonia, providing an additional safety margin during water changes. Well water is generally free of chlorine but may contain high mineral content or dissolved metals that should be tested before use.

Lighting and Placement

Axolotls are naturally adapted to low-light environments. In their native habitat, they inhabit murky, vegetation-dense lake bottoms where direct sunlight rarely penetrates. Their eyes lack eyelids and are sensitive to bright illumination, which causes visible stress responses including hiding, reduced activity, and appetite suppression. Housing that respects this light sensitivity is not a minor aesthetic consideration but a genuine welfare requirement.

Ambient room lighting is sufficient for most axolotl setups, and many experienced keepers forgo dedicated aquarium lighting entirely. If a light is used for viewing purposes or to support live plants, it should be a low-intensity LED set on a timer with no more than eight to ten hours of illumination per day. High-output aquarium lights designed for reef tanks or planted freshwater displays are far too intense and should not be used directly over an axolotl enclosure without significant dimming or elevation.

Providing ample hiding spots is the most effective way to give the axolotl control over its own light exposure. Caves, overhangs, PVC pipe sections, and dense plant cover allow the animal to retreat into shade during lit periods and emerge when it feels comfortable. An axolotl with access to multiple hides is noticeably calmer, more active during its preferred dim periods, and more willing to feed reliably than one exposed in a brightly lit, bare tank.

Tank placement within the room affects light exposure, temperature stability, and the animal's stress level. Avoid positioning the aquarium in direct sunlight, which causes uncontrollable temperature spikes and promotes algae growth. High-traffic areas where people frequently walk past the tank can also stress a sensitive axolotl, particularly during its acclimation period. A quiet corner or low-traffic room with stable ambient temperature and indirect lighting provides the calmest environment. The tank should also be placed on a stand or surface rated to support its filled weight, which for a 20-gallon setup exceeds 200 pounds.

Tank Mates

The safest and most universally recommended approach to axolotl housing is a species-only tank, either with a single axolotl or with multiple axolotls of similar size. Axolotls are not social animals that benefit from companionship, and their tolerance of tank mates is limited by their predatory instincts, their vulnerability to fin-nipping species, and the narrow temperature range they require. Most cohabitation attempts introduce risk without providing any measurable benefit to the axolotl.

Housing multiple axolotls together is feasible when the animals are closely matched in size, the tank is large enough to provide individual territory, and multiple hides are available so each animal can establish its own resting spot. Significant size mismatches are dangerous because axolotls will attempt to eat anything that fits in their mouth, including the limbs and gills of smaller tank mates. While axolotls can regenerate lost limbs, the injury itself causes stress, introduces infection risk, and diverts metabolic resources away from normal growth and maintenance.

Fish are generally poor companions for axolotls. Small fish become prey. Larger or more active fish often nip at the axolotl's feathery gills, which are delicate, highly vascularized structures that do not tolerate repeated trauma. Tropical fish require warmer water than axolotls can tolerate, creating a fundamental incompatibility that no amount of acclimation can resolve. Some keepers report success with small, cold-water-tolerant species like white cloud mountain minnows, but even these arrangements carry inherent risk and require vigilant monitoring.

Snails are sometimes introduced as tank cleaners, and certain species coexist without incident. Large mystery snails and nerite snails are generally too big for an axolotl to swallow and contribute to algae control and detritus cleanup. Very small snails, however, can be ingested and may cause digestive issues depending on shell hardness. Shrimp are almost universally treated as food by axolotls and should only be added if the keeper intends them as live prey enrichment rather than permanent residents. Any tank mate arrangement should be considered provisional and reversed immediately if signs of aggression, injury, or stress appear in any animal.
