Protein should constitute the majority of the diet, with moderate fat and minimal carbohydrate content. Axolotls fed high-fat diets over extended periods develop hepatic lipidosis, a condition where fat infiltrates the liver tissue and compromises organ function. This is particularly relevant when selecting commercial pellets, as some aquatic formulas designed for fish contain fillers and fat levels that are inappropriate for amphibians. Reading ingredient labels carefully and choosing pellets formulated specifically for carnivorous aquatic species is essential.

Calcium and phosphorus balance matters for axolotls just as it does for other captive herptiles, though the risk of metabolic bone disease is lower than in terrestrial species because axolotls absorb some minerals directly from their water. Nonetheless, a diet composed exclusively of a single prey type can create deficiencies over time. The most reliable strategy is rotating between two or three food sources so that the nutritional weaknesses of one are compensated by the strengths of another.

What to Look For

The single most important criterion when selecting axolotl food is that it sinks. Axolotls are bottom feeders that locate prey primarily through smell and lateral line vibration detection. They do not surface-feed and will ignore floating pellets or foods that drift in the water column above their usual resting zone. Any pellet or prepared food must descend to the substrate quickly and hold its shape long enough for the axolotl to find and consume it.

Ingredient quality separates acceptable foods from genuinely nutritious ones. For pellets, the first several ingredients should be whole fish meal, shrimp meal, or other identifiable animal proteins rather than grain-based fillers like wheat flour or soy. Size appropriateness is a practical concern that changes as the axolotl grows. A general guideline is that individual food items should not exceed the width of the axolotl's head, ensuring the animal can swallow comfortably without excessive effort.

Staple Foods

Nightcrawlers, also sold as Canadian earthworms or dew worms, are the most universally recommended staple food for axolotls of all ages past the hatchling stage. They are nutritionally dense, carrying a strong protein profile with moderate fat and a calcium content that exceeds most other commonly available prey items. Their soft body is easily digested, and their natural wriggling movement triggers a strong feeding response even in picky eaters. For juvenile axolotls, nightcrawlers can be cut into appropriately sized pieces with clean scissors before offering.

Sinking carnivore pellets designed for aquatic species serve as an excellent complementary staple, particularly for keepers who want a convenient, shelf-stable option that ensures consistent nutrition. The best formulations use salmon meal or whole fish as primary ingredients and include added vitamins and minerals that round out the diet. Pellets are especially useful for maintaining nutrition during periods when live food is unavailable or when the keeper needs to travel and rely on others for feeding duties.

Frozen bloodworm cubes are a dietary mainstay for juvenile axolotls and a useful supplemental food for adults. They are inexpensive, widely available at pet stores, and eagerly consumed. However, bloodworms alone lack the nutritional density of earthworms or quality pellets, so they should not serve as the sole food source for animals beyond the juvenile stage. Think of them as a reliable supporting player rather than the centerpiece of the diet.

Blackworms, sold live at many aquarium shops, are another strong staple option. They are high in protein, easy for axolotls to consume, and their wriggling movement on the tank bottom makes them irresistible to most animals. Their main drawback is shelf life and maintenance: blackworms need daily rinsing and cool storage temperatures, and they deteriorate rapidly if neglected. Keepers who commit to the upkeep find them one of the most nutritious foods available.

Variety and Occasional Feeders

Dietary variety prevents nutritional gaps and provides behavioral enrichment for an animal that, despite its placid appearance, is an active and opportunistic predator in its native habitat. Axolotls that receive a monotonous diet sometimes develop reduced appetite or become fixated on a single food type to the point of refusing all others. Introducing variety early and maintaining it consistently avoids this problem.

Brine shrimp, both live and frozen, are a useful occasional food and an indispensable first food for very young axolotls and recently hatched larvae. Adult axolotls will eat them readily but gain relatively little nutritional value per feeding session due to the small size and low caloric density of individual shrimp. They are best used as an appetizer or a supplemental offering on lighter feeding days rather than as a caloric workhorse.

Daphnia, sometimes called water fleas, serve a similar niche. They are easy to culture at home, providing a perpetual supply of live food that is nutritionally sound if the culture is fed well. Daphnia are particularly valuable during the juvenile growth phase when small, frequent meals are ideal. For adult axolotls, a cloud of daphnia released into the tank stimulates natural hunting behavior and provides light nutrition without the risk of overfeeding.

Small feeder fish such as guppies or endlers are accepted by many adult axolotls but should be offered sparingly and sourced with care. Feeder fish from pet stores frequently carry parasites, bacteria, or diseases that can transfer to the axolotl. Quarantining feeder fish for at least two weeks before offering them significantly reduces this risk. Even with quarantine, whole fish are high in thiaminase depending on the species, which can interfere with vitamin B1 absorption if fed in excess. Supplements

Axolotls that eat a varied diet of nightcrawlers, quality pellets, and rotating supplemental prey generally receive adequate nutrition without heavy supplementation. Unlike terrestrial reptiles that depend on dusted insects for their mineral intake, axolotls absorb calcium and other minerals partly through their skin and gills from the surrounding water. This passive mineral uptake, combined with the calcium content of whole-body prey like earthworms, means that dedicated calcium dusting is rarely necessary for most keepers.

Water mineral content therefore functions as an indirect but important form of supplementation. Axolotls kept in very soft, mineral-depleted water may develop subtle deficiencies over time even with an otherwise excellent diet. Using a water conditioner that includes trace minerals, or adding a small amount of calcium carbonate to the water during changes, helps maintain the ambient mineral levels that support gill and skeletal health. Test kits for general hardness provide a simple way to monitor this.

Vitamin supplementation is occasionally warranted for animals recovering from illness, those that have experienced prolonged appetite loss, or breeding females whose nutritional demands increase substantially during egg production. Liquid amphibian vitamin supplements can be applied directly to food items before offering. However, routine vitamin supplementation for a healthy axolotl on a balanced diet is unnecessary and risks hypervitaminosis, particularly with fat-soluble vitamins that accumulate in tissue.

The most effective form of supplementation for axolotls is simply feeding high-quality, varied food. A nightcrawler that has been living in nutrient-rich soil delivers a broader spectrum of minerals and vitamins than any powder or liquid additive applied after the fact. Investing in the best food sources available does more for long-term health than layering supplements on top of a mediocre diet.

Foods to Avoid

Axolotls should never be fed any food that contains gravel, sand, or hard inorganic particles. Because axolotls feed by creating a vacuum with a rapid snap of their jaws, they inevitably ingest substrate material along with their food when fed directly on gravel or coarse sand. Ingested gravel causes intestinal impaction, one of the most common and potentially fatal health emergencies in captive axolotls. Feeding in a bare-bottom section of the tank or using a shallow dish eliminates this risk entirely.

Processed human foods, including cooked meats, deli products, and seasoned proteins of any kind, are wholly inappropriate. The salt content, preservatives, and cooking oils in these items are toxic to amphibians whose permeable skin and gills make them exceptionally sensitive to chemical exposure. Even unseasoned cooked chicken or beef, sometimes suggested in outdated care guides, lacks the moisture content and whole-body nutrient profile that raw prey provides and introduces unnecessary bacterial risk to the water.

Live insects marketed for terrestrial reptiles, such as crickets, mealworms, and dubia roaches, are poor choices for axolotls. Their hard exoskeletons are difficult for axolotls to digest, and terrestrial insects drown quickly in water, losing nutritional value and fouling the tank. Chitinous material that passes through the digestive tract undigested can contribute to blockages, particularly in younger animals. Stick to aquatic and soft-bodied prey that aligns with the axolotl's natural feeding ecology.

Feeder goldfish and rosy red minnows deserve special caution. These species are high in thiaminase, an enzyme that breaks down vitamin B1, and chronic consumption leads to thiamine deficiency with neurological symptoms including loss of coordination and appetite failure. Beyond the thiaminase concern, mass-produced feeder fish are notorious vectors for parasites and bacterial infections. The momentary convenience of tossing in a feeder fish is not worth the veterinary bills and health complications that frequently follow.

Feeding Schedule

Hatchling and larval axolotls require daily feeding of small, live prey to support their rapid early growth. Newly hatched axolotls subsist on their yolk sac for the first 24 to 48 hours and then transition to live baby brine shrimp or microworms, the only foods small enough for their tiny mouths. Feedings should occur once or twice daily, with uneaten food siphoned out promptly to maintain water quality. This intensive feeding phase continues until the animal reaches approximately two inches in length and can accept larger foods.

Juvenile axolotls between two and six inches grow steadily and should be fed daily or every other day, depending on the size of each meal. At this stage, chopped nightcrawlers, small whole blackworms, and appropriately sized sinking pellets form the core diet. Each feeding session should offer enough food for the animal to eat at a relaxed pace over five to ten minutes. Juveniles that are underfed during this window grow slowly and may never reach their full potential size, while those that are chronically overfed develop fatty deposits and are more prone to digestive issues.

Adult axolotls over eight inches thrive on a feeding schedule of two to three times per week. Their slower metabolism and reduced growth demands mean they simply do not need daily meals, and overfeeding adults is the most common nutritional mistake keepers make. A single adult feeding might consist of two or three nightcrawler segments or a measured portion of pellets roughly equivalent to the size of the animal's head. Observing the abdomen after feeding provides immediate feedback: a gentle rounding is normal, while visible distension indicates too much food was offered.

Seasonal and temperature-driven appetite changes are normal and should be respected rather than overridden. Axolotls kept at the cooler end of their preferred range eat less frequently and digest more slowly, which is a natural and healthy metabolic adjustment. During warmer periods or if tank temperatures creep upward, appetite may increase but so does the risk of water quality deterioration from uneaten food and increased waste output. Adjusting feeding frequency in step with temperature keeps the animal healthy and the water clean year-round.
