What to Avoid

Not every product marketed for reptile enrichment is appropriate for Armadillo Lizards, and some popular items pose direct safety risks to this small, heavily armored but vulnerable species. Understanding what to avoid is as important as knowing what to provide, particularly because the exotic pet market frequently packages products with broad claims that do not account for species-specific anatomy or behavior.

Exercise wheels and running balls, occasionally marketed for small lizards, are entirely inappropriate for Armadillo Lizards. These animals are not built for sustained, repetitive locomotion; their short limbs, heavy body armor, and low-slung body plan are adapted for slow, deliberate navigation of rocky terrain. Forcing or encouraging rapid running in a wheel or ball produces physical stress on joints and musculature that are not designed for that movement pattern, and the enclosed ball format eliminates the animal's ability to thermoregulate or seek refuge.

Small, loose decorative items such as glass marbles, small shells, or miniature resin figurines should be excluded from the enclosure. Any object small enough to be accidentally ingested during a feeding strike poses an impaction risk, and smooth, lightweight items can shift under the lizard's weight and create unstable footing that the animal cannot navigate safely. All furnishings should be heavy enough to remain stationary when the lizard walks over or pushes against them and large enough that accidental ingestion is impossible.

Mirrors, sometimes recommended as visual enrichment for social species, are not appropriate for Armadillo Lizards.
