Staple Feeder Insects

Small crickets are the most widely available and commonly used staple feeder for Armadillo Lizards. Small Dubia roaches represent an excellent staple alternative and are increasingly preferred by experienced keepers. They carry a superior protein-to-fat ratio compared to crickets, gut-load exceptionally well, are long-lived in storage, and produce no noise or odor when properly maintained. Their smooth-sided housing requirements make escape essentially impossible. For Armadillo Lizards, nymph-sized Dubias in the quarter-inch to half-inch range are the appropriate size class, providing a manageable meal that the lizard can consume without difficulty.

Black soldier fly larvae have earned a role as a supplementary staple due to their naturally elevated calcium content, which reduces the dusting requirement at those specific feedings. They are slow-moving, easy to store in moderate temperatures, and generally well accepted by Armadillo Lizards. Several insect species are directly toxic to reptiles and must be strictly excluded. Fireflies and other bioluminescent beetles contain lucibufagins, compounds that are lethal to lizards even in very small quantities. The precautionary principle applies absolutely: if you cannot confirm that an insect is captive-bred and species-identified as safe, it does not go into the enclosure.
