The Armadillo Lizard (Ouroborus cataphractus) is a small, heavily armored insectivore native to the rocky outcrops of South Africa's western coast. In the wild, these lizards subsist primarily on termites, particularly the harvester termite Microhodotermes viator, supplemented by beetles, spiders, and other small invertebrates encountered among the sandstone crevices they inhabit. Captive diets must replicate both the nutritional profile and the moderate caloric density of this natural intake, as Armadillo Lizards are slow-growing, relatively sedentary reptiles whose metabolism does not demand the high-volume feeding schedules appropriate for more active species.
Calcium and phosphorus balance is the cornerstone of Armadillo Lizard nutrition, as it is for virtually all insectivorous reptiles. Commercially bred feeder insects are naturally phosphorus-heavy, and without consistent correction through gut-loading and supplemental dusting, the cumulative imbalance leads to metabolic bone disease. This is particularly consequential for Armadillo Lizards because their distinctive osteoderms and reinforced skeletal structure are calcium-intensive to maintain. A target ratio of approximately 2:1 calcium to phosphorus across the overall diet, achieved through a combination of dusting and gut-loading, supports both bone integrity and the ongoing maintenance of their armored scales.
Fat management is another critical consideration. Armadillo Lizards in the wild experience seasonal fluctuations in prey availability and are physiologically adapted to leaner periods. Captive animals with unlimited access to high-fat feeders quickly become obese, a condition that stresses the liver, reduces reproductive fitness, and shortens lifespan. The ideal diet emphasizes lean, moderate-protein staple insects with fatty feeders reserved strictly for occasional use.
Hydration is easily overlooked in a species adapted to arid conditions, but captive Armadillo Lizards still require consistent access to clean water. They absorb moisture from their prey and will drink from shallow dishes, particularly after basking. Dehydration manifests subtly in this species, often presenting as reduced appetite and dull, flaky skin before more obvious signs appear. Ensuring that feeder insects are themselves well-hydrated through gut-loading contributes meaningfully to the lizard's overall fluid intake.
