The water dish is the single most used accessory in an Amazon Milk Frog enclosure, interacted with more frequently than any other furnishing. These frogs soak nightly, absorb water and electrolytes through their ventral skin, and excrete waste directly into the water, which means the dish functions simultaneously as a hydration station, a behavioral enrichment feature, and a primary waste collection point. Selecting the right dish and maintaining it properly has a disproportionate impact on the animal's day-to-day health.
Size and depth are the first considerations. The dish should be wide enough for the largest frog in the enclosure to sit comfortably with its limbs relaxed, and shallow enough that the water level does not exceed the depth of the frog's lower jaw when resting. For adult Amazon Milk Frogs, a dish with an interior diameter of approximately five to six inches and a water depth of one to one and a half inches is appropriate. Excessively deep water features create a drowning risk for juveniles and can trap weakened or ill adults who lack the strength to climb out.
Material matters more than aesthetics. Glazed ceramic dishes are heavy enough to resist tipping from the weight of a large frog climbing in and out, and their non-porous surface is easy to sanitize without harboring bacterial biofilms. Resin and molded stone-effect dishes designed for reptile use are lightweight and naturalistic in appearance but require more aggressive cleaning because their textured surfaces trap organic material. Plastic dishes are inexpensive and functional but may absorb odors over time and should be replaced periodically rather than relied upon indefinitely.
An elevated secondary water dish or pool positioned at mid-height in the enclosure provides an enrichment dimension beyond what a substrate-level dish offers. Amazon Milk Frogs are drawn to water sources above ground level, reflecting their natural use of water-filled tree holes and bromeliad axils. A small, sturdy dish secured to a branch or ledge with aquarium-safe silicone or a magnetic mounting system gives the frogs access to water at the height where they spend most of their time, reducing the distance they must travel to hydrate and encouraging the natural soaking behavior that maintains skin health.
